ANNOUNCEMENTS August 25, 2008 TO ALL MILLER STUDENTS AND STAFF 1. The Library will be open during brunch and lunch. 2. The Outside Lockers: are for band students only, and are used only with school-issued locks. If you have placed your own lock on a locker, please remove it by the end of the day today (Monday), or we will cut it off. 3. Tiankai will speak on the topic of “Mathematics and More: What I Learned at CUSD schools” on Wednesday, September 3rd, from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Hunter Gym. This event is free to middle school students and their parents. If you love math, you won’t want to miss this! 7. QST: has a new name! Our after school study hall will now be called “Miller Power Hour.” In other words, “MPH— Speeding Toward Success!” MPH will begin Monday, September 8. The food cart outside of room 32 is a speedline for 7th and 8th graders. The food cart inside the MP room is for box lunches or snacks. No cash will be accepted at the speedlines. Thank you. 7. Good Neighbor Policy: Students, we ask that you respect our neighborhood as you come to school in the morning and leave school in the afternoon. Please do not take shortcuts and walk on neighbor's lawns or hang out in front of homes. Please don't litter (drop wrappers, cups, gum, etc.). 8. Traffic Safety: If you use a bicycle, skateboard, scooter or roller skate/blades, you must observe all safety rules and wear a helmet. 9. Trash/Recycling: We encourage everyone to recycle and dispose of trash in the appropriate containers. Silver, metal cans for trash (food, plastic wrappers, material, etc…). Blue, plastic cans for cans, plastic, or glass bottles. Gray, plastic cans for paper/cardboard that does not have food on it. ANNOUNCEMENTS August 27, 2008 TO ALL MILLER STUDENTS AND STAFF 1. News from the Office: Students, please take your blue lunch envelopes directly to the Cafeteria to avoid any delays in putting money in your accounts. Do not bring the envelopes to the office. 2. The office will no longer call students to pick up lunches and homework. If you forget your lunch or your homework, please come to the office and check the table. Now is a good time to learn to check that you have all your items (homework, PE clothes, lunch) before you leave for school. Develop good habits that will help you while you are at Miller and later when you go on to high school and college and beyond! 3. New schedule with 2nd semester classes will be passed out to you in December. Do not come to the office for a printout of the schedule as the schedule will not available until December. 4. Club signups will be announced during Daily Announcements as they become available. We do not know the dates. 5. Daily Announcements will be read over the broadcast system and uploaded on the Miller website, and printed copies may be picked up in the office. Announcements are also posted around campus, for example, in front of the library, on or near the display cases by the portables and the boys and girls locker rooms, and on the wall by the cafeteria line. Don’t miss out on all the exciting Miller activities – be alert and keep your eyes and ears out for the Daily Announcements! 6. Applying to Private High School? The following describes the required steps for Miller Middle School students who are applying to Private High School. Please read everything carefully! Step 1: Obtain an application from the admissions office of the private high school (s). Step 2: Separate the materials and determine which forms you and your parents will complete, and which forms Miller staff need to complete for you (teacher recommendations, etc.) Step 3: Check application deadlines! Please allow your teachers and counselors at least four weeks to complete your recommendations! Step 4: Bring the forms that need to be completed by Miller Staff to your counselor, including requests for teacher recommendations. Please place all materials in a large envelope and include two first class stamps. Please do not give teacher recommendation forms directly to the teachers Step 5: Your counselor will distribute the teacher recommendation forms to the teachers, gather your transcript, standardized test scores, and any other materials that are applicable. Once all the materials are collected, your counselor will mail the documents directly to the school. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Helpful Hints * Miller will send the school a copy of your transcript, so you do not need to fill in your grades on the application * Please indicate which teachers you would like to write your recommendations. The Cupertino Union School District is no longer using Parent Connect in the schools. A new program called Pinnacle will be available in October which will allow parents to be informed about their students' attendance, assignments and grades. AVAILABLE IN OCTOBER… GRADES & ATTENDANCE ONLINE: PARENT INTERNET VIEWER (PIV) Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) allows you to view your student’s grades and attendance in a real-time atmosphere. It is similar to ParentConnect, but it corresponds with Pinnacle, the district’s new grading/attendance program. In order to give teachers an opportunity to become familiar with the new grading program, log-in and password information will be mailed home in early October. By using your assigned Student ID and password, you will then be able to view your student’s current grade and attendance information. Thank you for your patience as we make this transition.

Reminders: 1. Turn in your school forms: Students, turn in your forms during second period (homeroom). We need your enrollment card, blue lunch envelope, student internet agreement form, and PTA items. Teachers in periods 3 through 6 will collect forms all day today, so get them in, everyone! 2. PE Clothes and Planners: Planners and PE clothes will be sold in the gym during your PE classes, and at brunch and lunch. 3. Arriving on Campus: Zero period students may go to their classrooms at 7:35 am. First period students, do not come onto campus. It is disturbing to the Zero period classes. Please wait behind the gates until the 1st period bell rings at 8:35 am. 4. Collaborative Wednesdays will start this Wednesday, August 27th. This is a reminder that Zero period students should NOT be on campus before 8:55 am. First period will start at 9:48 am, so first period students may wait in front of the gates at 9:38 am. If you are unable to find an alternative means of transportation, Room 16 will be open for students with Zero period at 7:45 am, and for students who start at 1st period, the library will be open at 8:30 am. 5. Attendance: Parents, call (408) 252-3755; hit extension 6. All absences must be reported by 9:00 am each morning that a student is absent. Include student's name, grade, reason for absence, and your relation to the child. 6. Food carts: Snack foods and beverages may be purchased with CASH daily from the campus food cart located in front of the cafeteria. However, the speed lines and salad bar areas are strictly “no cash” lines in order to expedite service. There are two speedline only food carts. The food cart outside of room 32 is a speedline for 7th and 8th graders. The food cart inside the MP room is for box lunches or snacks. No cash will be accepted at the speedlines. Thank you. 7. Good Neighbor Policy: Students, we ask that you respect our neighborhood as you come to school in the morning and leave school in the afternoon. Please do not take shortcuts and walk on neighbor's lawns or hang out in front of homes. Please don't litter (drop wrappers, cups, gum, etc.). 8. Traffic Safety: If you use a bicycle, skateboard, scooter or roller skate/blades, you must observe all safety rules and wear a helmet. 9. Trash/Recycling: We encourage everyone to recycle and dispose of trash in the appropriate containers. Silver, metal cans for trash (food, plastic wrappers, material, etc…).
