Plans and Time Frame for Graduation Ceremony The Graduation Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at 4:00 PM on the Miller field adjacent to the track. Seating will be reserved for the Miller Staff and the PTA Graduation Party Committee only. The ceremony will take approximately an hour and a half; students should expect to pick up their diplomas between 5:30 - 6 pm, and should be able to leave with family members by 6 pm. The Graduation Party will be scheduled from 7:30 to 10:30 PM, and may be attended by graduating eighth grade students only. A dance, games, and refreshments (drinks, desserts, and snacks) will be provided for the graduates in the multi-purpose room and in the Quad. For the ceremony itself boys are encouraged to wear slacks, a dress shirt with a tie, and dress shoes. Girls are encouraged to wear dresses or skirts and blouses that are modest and simple (no strapless or low cut), and flat shoes or shoes with low heels. The dress guidelines are meant to be simple and straightforward and not require parents to spend money for clothes that are not practical. We encourage parents and students to use good judgment and taste, and we remind you that this event is an 8th grade promotion exercise, not a high school senior prom. In order to fully enjoy the dance and activities, which are part of the graduation party, students may wish to change clothes before returning for the party. Regular dress code rules for school days apply to dress code for the dance and party. Diplomas Graduation diplomas will be distributed immediately following the graduation ceremony. Diplomas will be distributed from the rooms facing the track. Diplomas will be grouped alphabetically by the student’s last name. If there are any errors to your student’s diploma please return the diploma to the school office the following day.

Minimum Day Schedule for June 11 and 12: 0 period 8:07- 8:35 am 1st period 8:38 - 9:06 2nd period 9:09 - 9:37 3rd period 9:40 - 10:08 BRUNCH 10:08 -10:33 4th period 10:33 - 11:01 5th period 11:04 - 11:32 6th period 11:35 - 12:03 pm Dismissal.

Graduation Standards & Policies Academic Standards: (for participating in the graduation ceremony) 1) Cupertino Union School District requires all students to pass all courses to graduate (this means academic courses, PE, and electives). Students are expected and encouraged to achieve to their highest potential. A student who earns at least a D average in all classes may participate in the graduation ceremony. All middle schools use the following point scale: A = 5 points D = 2 points B = 4 points C = 3 points F = 0 points In order to graduate, students must receive a total of at least 8 points in all year long courses, and at least 4 points in all semester long electives, in the four quarters of a year’s course work. Here’s an example of how the policy works: John earned an “F” in the first quarter in English, a “D” in the second quarter, and a “D-“ in the third quarter. So far, he has 4 points. He must get at least a “B” (4 points) the fourth quarter in order to graduate. * Note: + and - on a grade does not make a difference on the point scale. 2) Students are required to attend classes at least 85% of the school days from the first day of school, or the date of enrollment (if the students arrived in the middle of the year.) In the absence of extenuating circumstances, failure to meet this requirement will result in exclusion from the graduation ceremony. 85% attendance means that students may not miss more than 27 days in the school year if they started on August 23rd of this year. (It would be fewer days if the student enrolled after August 23rd. Parents should note that there is no distinction made between excused or unexcused absences. If these two requirements are not met, the student will not be able to participate in the graduation ceremony. Please note that not participating in the graduation ceremony does not mean that the student will be retained. Cupertino Union School District has a separate promotion/retention policy. Graduation Dance/Party: In most cases, all students who meet the requirements to participate in graduation will be able to attend the party/dance following the ceremony. However, any student who has been suspended 3 or more times during the school year, will be subject to review by the administration. Please note any serious discipline issue may result in exclusion from the graduation party, and is at the administrators’ discretion.

GRADUATION – Message for 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Parents Miller graduation is now less than 2 months away. It is on the afternoon of June 11, with party to follow after dinner. We need parent volunteers on the 10th, 11th and 12th of June. For those of you with non-8th grade kids, it will be a good chance to be sneaky and see what you like and don't like and how you want your child's graduation event to be next year or the year after. Note to 6th and 7th grade parents: It is a tradition for the 6th and 7th grade parents to help out at graduation so that the 8th grade students don’t have to have their own parents at their graduation party. Please contact Shubhada (shubhada_pradhan@yahoo.com, phone 408-446-1235) or Anupama (aduraphe@gmail.com) to sign up. We will send you reminders the week before, and a couple of days before the day for which you signed up. We need a number of people and multiple people are required for each of these time slots. Volunteers are needed as follows: Podium: June 11th 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm (non-8th grader parents required) Food/Entertainment/Photos/Paparazzi: June 11th: Shift I: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. June 11th: Shift II: 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm Decorations: June 10th: Shift I: 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm June 10th: Shift II: 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm June 11th: Shift I: 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm June 11th: 2 people from 10:30 pm to 11:00 pm Teardown: June 12th 8:00 am to 10:00 am
