AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF AERONAUTICS & ASTRONAUTICS (AIAA)
INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
21st Annual Essay Contest for students in Seventh and Eighth Grade
“How important is international cooperation for the growth of space exploration?”
REQUIREMENTS:
• Double-spaced, typewritten (size 12 font) essay, in 250 words or less.
• Student name, teacher name, grade, and school name must be written in the top right hand corner of
the essay.
• Please include person-in-charge contact information for notification.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
a) Originality and realism of ideas presented
b) Soundness of logic used to develop ideas
c) Quality of composition and clarity of expression
(Note: All decisions by the judges are final.)
PRIZES: At each grade level:
First: $500 US Savings Bonds
Second: $250 US Savings Bonds
Third: $100 US Savings Bonds
ELIGIBILITY: Any seventh or eighth grader enrolled in a school in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San
Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, or Santa Cruz counties.
DEADLINE: Essays must be received by
April 3, 2009. Late essays will not be accepted. Mail

Winners and their teachers will be notified in early May. All winners will be honored at an AIAA – SF
section awards dinner to be held in
May 2009.
