6th Grade Civics Academy: (Mr. McLemore English and Social Studies and Civic Elective)
Students will explore the beginnings of citizenship and the advancement of democracy in Ancient
Civilizations. Students will meet with consulates from countries that stem from a Parliamentary system
in order to learn what it means to be a citizen and develop an understanding of not only their rights,
but also responsibilities to society.
7th Grade Civics Academy: (Mrs. Huff – English / Mrs. Tanguay – Social Studies)
This interdisciplinary team will focus on preparing students to actively participate and become aware
of their actions as a global citizen. Students will form community partnerships, allowing them to
engage in conversations regarding their world. They will learn activism, leadership and debating skills,
as they become social activists.
8th Grade Civics Academy: (Mrs. Huff – English / Mrs. Tanguay – Social Studies)
This interdisciplinary team will focus on preparing students to become proficient in research and
writing that will enable them to actively participate as citizens in local government and community-
based concerns through mock trials and courtroom discussions with the San Fernando Bar Association.
Students will travel on an overnight curricular trip, allowing them to experience first-hand, their world
in action (past trips have included Washington D.C. Presidential Inauguration, Sacramento State
Capitol Assembly tour, Boston Freedom Historical Trip). Students will engage in competitive debates
as they learn strategies to create the changes that they would like to see in the world today
