The Millikan Math Academy is a rigorous program designed for students who excel in mathematics and wish to advance their content understanding and or knowledge.  Games, projects, and problem solving through cooperative and independent “PROBLEM OF THE WEEK” SITUATIONS WILL BE USED.  These “POW’s” will enrich conceptual understanding of the standards and logical reasoning.

PRE REQUISITES:

INCOMING 6^TH GRADE (limited to 40 students)

v  Pre-Algebra placement exam (score in the top 40 of students who take the test)

v  Letter of recommendation on work habits and cooperation from 5^th grade teacher.

v  Score of 3 or 4 on most current report card

v  Other Characteristics:  ability to work in group settings, leadership potential, verbally articulate

INCOMING 7^TH GRADE (limited to 40 students)

v  Algebra readiness exam

v  Letter of recommendation from 6^th grade teacher on work habits and cooperation for new students

v  Academy continuation notice for continuing students.

v  Other characteristics:  ability to work in group settings, leadership potential, verbally articulate.

All Academy courses will be scheduled during 2^nd period and homeroom with no passing period.  Students WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE AN ELECTIVE. (YEAH!)

COURSES:

6^TH Grade

PRE ALGEBRA – Students will become adept at manipulating numbers and equations and will understand general principles at work.  Students will gain a deeper understanding of rational numbers, will know and use the different representations of rational numbers, will be able to change from on representation to another proficiently and will compute interest and percents of increase and decrease readily.  They will increase their understanding of ratio and proportion and apply this knowledge to topics of basic three dimensional figures, as well at understand the idea of slope and it’s relation to ratio (LAUSD MIG).  Course is designed to prepare students for Algebra 1AB in 7^th Grade.  Text:  McDougal Little Course 2

7^th Grade

ALGEBRA:  Students will develop symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols central to Algebra.  Through the study of Algebra, students develop and understand the symbolic language of the mathematics and the sciences.  In addition, Algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem solving situations (LAUSD MIG).  Successful completion of the course with an A or B will result in high school Algebra credit and student’s placement in high school level Geometry in 8^th grade.

Millikan math Academy Students are leaders.  They will be expected to complete 10 hours of volunteer peer tutoring per semester.  This will take place after school. 

Placement exam will take place on May 5^th, 2011at 3:30pm  in Room 60.
