Welcome to Japan

Golden Temple in Kyoto

Kyoto is a city known for its
history and culture. The Golden
Pavilion is definitely a key
highlight on a trip to Kyoto. The
fabulous gardens surrounding the
temple are worth visiting just for
their beauty.

Harajuku

Harajuku is a trendy young area of
Tokyo. Teenage girls meet every
Sunday for what can be
called costume play.

Anime

Anime is the Japanese word for
Animation. In Japan, the animation
industry is much more towards the
forefront than it is in the United
States, and shows covering
virtually every genre can be found
in the form of television shows,
animated videos, and feature
films.

Much like any other entertainment
medium, anime can range from the
very silly to the very serious,
and is not necessarily intended
for children or any specific age
group.

Origami

Origami is the art of paper
folding. The word is Japanese,
literally meaning to fold (oru)
and paper (kami).

Watermelon

Within the study of the Japanese
culture is the discovery of
philosophies, methods, and customs
different from the west.
Occasionally weird, often
beautiful.

These watermelon cost a little
over $100.

Shinkansen

Shinkansen was inaugurated in the
year 1964 as the first shinkansen
line and the world's first high
speed train. In 1964 the trains
already run with speeds of about
200 km/h. Nowadays they reach
speeds of over 300 km/h.

Learning Japanese

In Japan, the language is
especially tied to culture. Words
are not simply sounds; when
combined with their symbol--
Kanji, deeper meaning
can be conveyed.
