This Week's News...

Bunny Buddy Brunch- THIS Friday, April 18.  I sent home a flyer today with what I'd love for you to donate to make this happen. Please let me know if you are unable to donate the item on the flyer.  If your item requires refrigeration, please wait to send it until the 18th. Thanks!

Coins for Kids- THIS WEEK! We're collecting coins (and bills!) for Children's Hospital in Oakland. Please consider donating to help this wonderful hospital care for the families that need Children's services.

State Report-
The students will be starting their state reports this week. They will be creating a PowerPoint presentation using information that they've learned from books and the internet. I have a template that they will be using for their PowerPoint.  With guidance, I'm hoping that this will be a successful and learning experience for the students!  We haven't used PowerPoint before, so this will have a learning curve associated with it. We are in the computer lab four days a week for 40 minutes, so I anticipate getting it all done at school, however students are welcome to do research at home and bring the websites that they used back to school.

Pledge forms for the Walk-a-Thon are in today's Monday Envelope. Please consider supporting this event. The money raised from this supports many activities at school including our computer labs, supervision at recess, Outdoor Education, and much more!  Last year's Walk-a-Thon helped your students get to go to Outdoor Education, so let's pay it forward! The event will be Friday, May 2 and we will be walking from 10:50-11:50am.

Standardized Testing-
STAR is no longer being administered, however there is a replacement test called the CAASSP... a long acronym for "standardized test".  The only portion of the old "STAR" (that is now the "CAASSP") is 5th grade science. This is a pencil/paper test that covers 4th and 5th grade science standards. We will administer that test on Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is at school on time having eaten breakfast. The Smarter Balance tests, the ones on the computer, will be started the following week and are NOT counted towards a score for your child. We are simply testing the test this year.  Next year, scores will be available for the Smarter Balance tests.

Open House
- Monte Gardens' Open House is Tuesday, May 13 from 6-7pm. Come see the projects that we've been working on!

Middle School Open House- Sequoia Middle's is May 21 from 6:45-8.  I strongly recommend that you attend if you are able. This is a great way to help ease the anxiety of going to a new school. Students will be able to see the campus, meet teachers, and get a feel for what they will be doing next year!  El Dorado's Open House is May 21 from 7-8pm with a meeting for fifth graders at 6pm. Foothill's Open House is May 21 from 7-8:15pm.

Cafeteria Accounts- Please pay your cafeteria bills.  We have a number of students that have a negative balance on their account. Jill is not obligated to serve lunch to students who have a negative balance.  PLEASE pay ASAP.

Language Arts- We are finishing In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson.  The students have been working through a literature journal as well.  We've been reading and making connections in the text. We'll also work through Wordly Wise Lesson 20. This is the last lesson in the book!  We'll be reviewing all of the words that we've learned after break.

- We are working through measurement and geometry this week in Chapter 22. We're focusing on volume this week.

Social Studies- We are continuing our study of the American Revolution.

Science- We're working through our study of matter.  We will be working on Chapter 8, changes in matter and chemical reactions this week.
