Dear
Parents,

We
are close to finishing our first month of school and are well underway, diving
into all areas of the curriculum.

In
language arts, we are reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.  In this book, Peter, a nine year-old
boy, is constantly faced with dilemmas involving his little brother Fudge.  Peter learns a great deal of patience,
but is continually trying to get his parents to pay attention to him instead of
his pesky little brother. 
Throughout our reading, students are developing comprehension skills,
learning new vocabulary, and working on improving reading fluency.  In connection with reading, students
are responding to literature through a variety of writing activities.  We
are also focusing on writing effective paragraphs and personal narratives.

I
am pleased to announce that all applicants were accepted into Monte Vista University!  Book Club groups will begin next
week.  I trust that your son or
daughter has already shared the MVU program and coursework binder with
you.  All students will work on
completing their Bachelor’s degrees by June, and hopefully will push forward to
also achieve their Master’s and Doctorate degrees.  You will receive an invitation as soon as your son or
daughter is prepared to graduate. 
I have asked that each student read the same book at home and at school
in order to maintain continuity and to avoid any possible confusion of having
more than one book going at a time. 
As soon as your son or daughter finishes reading a MVU book at his or
her reading level, he or she will work on completing a MVU book club letter or
project, as explained in the MVU coursework requirements.  These letters and projects will be
shared at our weekly book club meetings. 
If students are in the middle of reading a book, they must complete a
Book Club Update to share during the weekly meeting.  MVU binders may be brought home at any time, however I ask
that they be back at school each day. 
Students may work on MVU at any time and is a great extension for those
students ready for an extra challenge. I am looking forward to another
successful class of Monte Vista University graduates!

learning about the different regions of California and our state’s rich natural
resources.  Students will be creating
bean maps at the end of the month, showing the four regions of our state.

This
year is off to a great start!  It
is a delight to work with such an outstanding class of fourth grade scholars!

Information</h1>

Calendar
Sales:

·      Our fourth
grade Santa Barbara Calendar fundraiser
is underway! Today students should have brought home a sample calendar, an
order form, and fundraising information. 
We are encouraging each student to sell at least 10 calendars to family,
friends, and maybe even a parent’s coworkers!  Students should not
go door-to-door to people they don’t know.  At $11.00 each, these local calendars make great gifts and
are less expensive than buying them at the local bookstore.  Cara Moore is a talented photographer
and former Monte Vista parent.  Her
business partner came to speak to our classes about her photography and how
calendars are made.  Students have until
October 7th  to take orders and collect payments. Thank you again for helping our class raise
funds for field trips and extra curricular activities.  As a reminder, if you prefer to
make a donation to the fourth grade instead of selling calendars it is
fine.  (To cover the costs of the 4th
grade field trips and activities the donation would be $55.00)
