Frequently Asked QuestionsFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What is the best way to monitor my student's progress? Every four weeks you have an opportunity to monitor your student's progress through a variety of reports. At the end of each semester a grade will be given on the semester report card. This is the official grade that is recorded on the student's transcript. Midway in the semester (at the quarter) a quarter report card is sent home. This grade is not officially recorded on any permanent record. Midway between a quarter report card and start or end of semester, a progress report is sent home if a student is earning below a C grade in any class. Thus, there are 8 possible reports available to you during the year. Is there any way I can monitor my student's progress more frequently? Weekly progress reports are available in the Counseling office. A student can pick up a progress report when directed by a parent, taking it around to teachers to register their comments. E-mail addresses, teacher websites, and voice mail are three additional ways to communicate with teachers. See www.montgomeryhighschool.com for these links. How may I obtain a transcript? Transcripts may be obtained from the registrar for the Counseling Department. Transcript request forms are available in the Counseling Office. Call 528-5503 for more information or FAX 528-5504. When can my student change classes? During the fall semester, students have the first three (3) weks to request or make changes in their schedules. Requests of changes cannot be made after three weeks except for IWE/TA may be added up to the fifth week. Class level changes may be made throughout the semester with the approval of both teachers and parent. During the spring semester students have the first two (2) weeks to request/make changes in their schedules, and up to the fourth week of the spring semester to add a class as an IWE/Teacher assistant. Class level changes can be made throughout the semester with approval from the parent and teachers involved. Example--Honors English to Ac. English. If a student changes or drops a class after the deadline will receive an F grade in the class they have dropped, and no credit for the class added. These are deadlines adopted by the Santa Rosa City Schools Board of Education. How do I contact my student's teachers? There are currently three ways to contact most teachers. The first is by e- mail, where a teacher's first initial and last name is used with srcs.k12.ca.us following. For a listing see the MHS school website at www.montgomeryhighschool.com. Second, you may use the voice mail system that is listed on the school website under teacher contacts at www.montgomeryhighschool.com. Many teachers have established their own websites. You may reach them through a link on the MHS website or go to www.teacherweb.com Where can I find graduation/ college requirements? You may find these on page 11 of the student handbook, which is accessible through the MHS website. How can I monitor my student's attendance? You may call the attendance office at 528-5252 or 528-5251. It helps if you have your student's ID number when you call. How does a student's attendance affect credits earned? On the eleventh (11th) missed (unexcused) hour in any class, the student loses a credit. Thus, if he has 11 unexcused hours of absence during a semester he would recieve 4 credits, rather than 5. How can a student make up missed credits? Summer school is for students to make up missed credits. During the senior year, senior students also have access to night school and sometimes a spring 1-credit make up program at Santa Rosa High School. It is better not to wait to spring to accomplish this, because this is not always an available option. In certain instances Santa Rosa Junior College can help with credit make ups, and occasionally on-line correspondance classes are available for a fee. If a student is ill for two or more weeks, what resource is available? Home and Hospital is a district-sponsored program that assists students when they are ill or injured for a extraordinary amount of time. A Home and Hospital teacher is assigned to the student while s/he is absent, acting as the liaison between the classroom teacher and the student. A doctor's letter needs to request this. For more information call 284-8215 or see your counselor for a Home and Hospital Request form. How do I obtain homework for my student? After 3 consecutive days of absence call the attendance office who will request homework from teachers. 528-5252 or 528-5251 How can my student obtain a free lunch? Forms are available in the rack on the Counseling Office wall. After the form is completed the student may take to cafeteria staff. Where can I call if I am extremely distressed or suicidal? Call Sonoma Crisis Line at 938-4357 (938-HELP) or Sonoma County Mental Health Psychiatric Emergency Service at 576-8181. Where can I call if a student is about to do something illegal or dangerous? Call our school resource officer, David McDonald 528-5386 or any administrator at MHS--528-5512. If it is after school hours you may call Santa Rosa Police at 528-5222 or 911.
