Generally, students are assigned to counselors by alphabet. Counselors
are generalists having a wide breadth of experience and knowledge covering
all aspects of the high school experience. Students remain with the same
counselor throughout high school. The counselor's role at Montgomery High is
to deliver services to students, parents, teachers and administrators that
promote maximum student success in the educational setting. In this role,
the primary demand upon the counselor's time shall be made by the student.
While the focus of the counseling relationship is upon the individual, the
counselor recognizes the need to consider the student as a member of the
school, the home, and the community. Further, counseling services are
guaranteed all students since it is assumed that all students need
educational and personal guidance to get the most out of school.
The counselor is a professional consultant who engages in research and
curriculum development; most of all s/he is instrumental in the process of
human development. A number of students have significant adjustment
problems. Though the counseling can be therapeutic, the counselor does not
practice psychotherapy. The counselor seeks other professional aid for a
counselee who exhibits symptoms of severe maladjustment.
The basic duty of the counselor is to counsel with students regarding their
special career, educational, personal and social development. Counselors are
expected to use current information and to maintain and improve their skills
by attendance at both district and professional organization sponsored
conferences and workshops.
