The most favorite quote I ever read said, "All students are gifted...they
just open their presents at different times."
This is so true. Every child has the potential for greatness, as long as we
nurture and don't push, we encourage and not stress, we show them the way
and let them get their in their own time.
Students are so scared of making mistakes. I tell them that I make more
mistakes than they do. They don't believe me, until they find themselves
correcting me (some mistakes planned, some not). My reaction to my mistake
is paramount to how they will react when it's their turn. I laugh. Then I
thank them for helping me and we go on.
Humor is important in a classroom. Without laughter the day would be dull.
We all need to laugh (it's a great stress-reliever) and so we may talk about
something gross (2nd graders love gross anything). Definition of gross:
anything to do with boogers. We read silly poems by Jack Prelutsky or Shel
Silverstein. We read George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl and chuckle
through the entire story.
As a student, I hated school. It was boring and scary. My teachers were
wooden, with no personalities. I swore if I ever became a teacher, my
classroom would be a safe, fun place to learn. I believe I have
accomplished that because I love coming to school each day, and my students
bounce into class with smiles every morning.
