Projects

                         Second Quarter Project
Blood Typing Percentages in the U.S. Population

Page 1: Create an attractive yet creative cover for your project. It can be
computer generated or hand drawn, but must relate to the project’s theme.
Impress me with your creativity, and neatness.
Worth 5pts.

Page 2: Layout all 21 possible combinations of paternal blood types and their
84 possible offspring by neatly using punnett squares. The punnett squares
need to be neatly drawn with straight lines or grid paper can be used. If the
p/s are computer generated one extra credit point will be given. An organized
sequential reduction method must be used that makes sense to me, as well as
highlighting the 4 different phenotypes their own color.
Worth 10 pts.

Page 3: Record the probability of each blood type occurring (phenotypes only)
from the preceding page of offspring data. I want to see actual numbers,
their decimals, and percentages. This page will simply be a comparison of
actual (real) data compared to the data you generated in your punnett squares.
Worth 5 pts.

Page 4: Construct a comparison graph of your data results compared to the
actual population numbers in the United States. You will generate two pie
graphs (by hand) comparing the two streams of data. Excel or computer
generated graphs will not be accepted, but can be done for extra credit along
with the graphs done by hand.
Worth 10 pts. if it is a neat pie graph and 7 pts if it is a double bar graph.

Page 5: Formulate a hypothesis explaining why there are differences in the
actual numbers compared to those you generated through the 21 punnett squares
and graphs comparing the data. Support through research is necessary to
achieve a 3/4 page typed written hypothesis. A minimum of 3/4 page
typewritten using (12 point size) and double spaced is required.
Worth up to 10 points if a bibliography is used and up to 8 points if not.
This page is what you would call open-ended, so I expect all students
(especially GATE students) to reach for the stars an impress me with their
depth for explaining and supporting this hypothesis.

Project Due: Dec. 14th/ Worth 40 pts.
Much class time will be given for this project, about one day per page. It’s
important for the student to keep pace since it is progressive project. I
will be available for any extra help during 7th period.
