5th Grade News
Volume 12, Issue 3 November 22, 2013
I would like to extend a big “thank you” to the dads who came on the Star of India trip with us. They are: Mr. Legg, Mr. Kerr, Mr. Crawford, Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. Goncalves, Mr. Gentile, Mr. Mihalik, Mr. Wilhite, and Mr. Baglio. They were great sports and exhibited fine examples for the children to follow. Not only did they spend the night with us (sleeping on the deck), they also helped drive everyone to the ship. I think all of them enjoyed their time “at sea”. Thanks so much for everything.
I would also like to thank Mrs. Legg and Mrs. Guthrie who worked tirelessly to coordinate the “sailor letters”, nametags, snacks, parking, and drivers. Thanks for your generosity and time.
Another thank you goes to the moms who sent in the granola bars, beef jerky, cheese crackers, fruit, juice and water for our healthy snack before boarding the “Star”. Also, thanks to the moms who sent in the delicious biscuits to eat with our “rat stew” and the chocolate chip cookies. Boy did we ever need that food! Last, but not least, thanks to the families who donated the quarters for parking at the Star. Thanks for all of your contributions. They are most appreciated!
Star of India Field Trip – A Wonderful Success!
The results are in – the overnight trip on the Star of India was great! Everyone learned a lot and shared an experience that will always be remembered. We had PERFECT weather. Between going on rat hunts, unfurling the sails, cooking meals, and sharing time at “dogwatch”, we never had a dull moment. Our captain and his crew were professional and provided all of us with a challenging excursion.
I would like to thank every parent in the class for their support and assistance in making this trip become a reality. As all of you know, I really love this overnight and I am happy that the children are able to have this special experience. I could never have done it without YOU.
The class recently began working on their President Reports. The research and writing of this paper will help to prepare them to write their State Reports later this year. Please check with your child to be sure he/she has the necessary resources. A trip to the library may have been necessary. I have reviewed their thinking maps, note cards, and outlines. Their typed, double-spaced rough drafts are in the editing process. There is NOT a book report for December. Students should have read the biography about their president. The final report is due on December 6. Please ask your child to see the schedule of due dates and report requirements.
We are back to school on Monday, December 2.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE!
