COLONIAL LIFE PROJECT - DUE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4

Directions: Complete all of the following topics. Write neatly. Include a title page.

COLONIAL HOUSING

•	Make a list of materials the colonists used to build their homes. Explain the advantages of using 
each material.
•	Draw a picture of a typical colonial house. Label all the materials.

CLOTHING

•	Describe a typical colonial outfit. Include all outer-wear. Tell what materials were used to make 
the outfit.
•	Draw two pictures: one of a male outfit, one of a female outfit. Label all the items.

FOOD

•	Make a list of the foods that the colonists brought with them.
•	Corn was unknown to the colonists. Write a paragraph explaining the many uses the colonists 
found for corn in addition to being a food source.

WORK

•	Make 2 columns on a sheet of paper. Label one side “men,” the other “women.” In each section, 
list the chores performed by each gender. 
•	Write a paragraph explaining the process women used to make soap.

SCHOOLING

•	Discipline included these harsh methods: whipping with a birch rod, being placed in stocks for 
hours, wearing a dunce cap. Write a paragraph stating your opinion on whether these disciplines are 
effective or not.
•	Make 2 columns on a sheet of paper. Label one side “Colonial Schools,” and the other side 
“Modern Schools.” List at least 10 items on each side, comparing materials, rules, and teachers.

PASTIMES

•	List 5 activities colonial men did for fun. List 5 activities that women did for fun.
•	Write a paragraph describing activities Native Americans did for fun.



SPELLING
Each week we take a pre-test on Monday. The students correct the 
test in class. They must write the words that they miss 5 times each for 
homework. This comes back to school on Tuesday. After it is checked, the pre-
test should be used as a study guide for the Friday Spelling test. There is 
also a printed list in back of our Practice Book. It is the student's 
responsibility to bring the list home each week to study.

EXTRA CREDIT:

There are opportunities to earn extra credit for each core subject. The 
following are examples:
Spelling - Write all of your spelling words 10 times each for 5 extra points 
on your test.
Reading - Read extra minutes, add these to your reading chart; Complete the 
weekly challenge 
activity.
Writing - Complete extra writing pieces, or add extra information on reports.
Math - Complete any of the yellow border pages; ask for extra worksheets; do 
extra problems.
History - Complete the questions at the end of each lesson in the textbook; 
complete the Chapter 
Vocabulary definitions.
Science - Complete and write up any of the experiments from our book, or 
other books. Do a research report on a topic related to our unit of study.
