The North Woods' Technology program rests on the philosophy that students in primary grades should be exposed to technology, but not until middle school should students spend a significant amount of time using computers.
The primary students' educational priorities are to work with three dimensional objects, as well as learn how to read, write, and do math. There is a vast amount of recent research revealing the need to limit both computer and TV time in the primary grades.
Toward this end, primary students at North Woods are introduced to computers, but they are not given intensive instruction until grade six. From grades six to eight, students are expected to demonstrate skills such as: keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, editing digital graphics, digital audio and digital video, internet research and online information evaluation, web-authoring, etc.
All of this keeps in mind that the computer is merely a tool for promoting academics, and not an end in itself. When possible, technology lessons are integrated with core classroom instruction.
