What are the requirements of the Social Studies Report?
Third Grade Report Format Steps 1, 2 & 3 due: March 4,2008 (The timeline for completion is flexible...designed in parts to build success...completed project final due date is May 1st) Steps: 1. Choose a topic:_______________________________ (see attached list) 2. Write a paragraph (on another sheet of paper) telling all you know about your topic before you begin your report. Example: Shasta Dam by_________ __________ These are the things I already know about Shasta Dam. First, I know that Shasta Dam is located near the city of Shasta Lake. Second, Shasta Dam was built to keep Redding from flooding and to save water for farmers. Third, Shasta Lake is fun in the summer for skiing, swimming and boating. I hope to learn more about Shasta Dam after researching and finding answers to my questions. [topic sentence (begins the paragraph), detail sentences, & concluding sentence (sums up the paragraph)]. 3. Write 5 Questions about your topic. What do you hope to learn? Remember sentences should be answered in a paragraph. If your question can be answered in one word or one sentence... think of a better question. Example: Why was Shasta Dam built? rather than... When was Shasta Dam built? (the date could be added to the reasons for building the dam, etc.) __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ Third Grade Report Format Steps 4 & 5 due: March 11, 2008 STEPS Rough draft of questions & answers (Steps 4 & 5 may take longer if you have written for information...so write your letters early!!) 4. Research for answering your questions could include some of the following ideas: a. Interview a parent or resource person b. visit the site if possible (call to make an appointment if needed) c. collect brochures d. write a letter to a resource (business letter format) e. phone to speak to a resource (practice phone call first) f. take photographs at the site g. made a videotape of the site h. go to the library or bookstore to find books on your topic i. take a tour at your site and write from your experience j. look up your topic on the internet & print out copies to read http://www.californiahistoricalsociety.org/programs/ca_listings/045.html (this is organized by counties and is a good place to start) **Circle the research ideas you might like to try, then check with parent** 5. Write each question on a separate sheet of paper or note card and begin your rough draft to collect information (you will later use this information to write a paragraph for each question). Third Grade Report Format Steps 6 & 7 due: March 18th, 2008 STEPS 6. Turn your questions into topic sentences and organize your information into detail sentences. End each paragraph with a concluding sentence which summarizes your information and matches your topic sentence. Question: Why was Shasta Dam built? Example: Topic Sentence: There were five main reasons for building Shasta Dam. (list them in detail sentences, organized in order of importance or other logical way) Concluding Sentence: For all these reasons, Shasta Dam is very important to Shasta County and the state of California. 7. Re-write your paragraphs in neatest handwriting on white binder paper (may write on every other line) or type on the computer. Double space if typing and use a size 14 point font (no italics or cursive style please). Third Grade Report Format Steps 8, 9, 10 due: April 10, 2007 (**see me if you will need to continue up to Step 10 through our vacation break) 8. Create a Bibliography listing your resources. See samples for writing bibliographies for a book, internet source, magazine, or interview. 9. Create a Title Page listing topic, your name (first & last), date it is due...May 1, 2008 (or earlier) name of school and grade. 10. Draw a picture depicting something about your topic. Sample Title Page Bibliography Resource WHAT IS A BIBLIOGRAPHY? A bibliography is an alphabetical list of all materials consulted in the preparation of your assignment. WHY MUST YOU DO A BIBLIOGRAPHY? Some reasons: 1. To acknowledge and give credit to sources of words, ideas, diagrams, illustrations, quotations borrowed, or any materials summarized or paraphrased. 2. To show that you are respectfully borrowing other peoples ideas, not stealing them, i.e. to prove that you are not plagiarizing. 3. To offer additional information to your readers who may wish to further pursue your topic. 4. To give readers an opportunity to check out your sources for accuracy. An honest bibliography inspires reader confidence in your writing. 5. Your teacher insists that you do a bibliography or points will be deducted. WHAT MUST BE INCLUDED IN A BIBLIOGRAPHY? * AUTHOR * TITLE * PLACE OF PUBLICATION * PUBLISHER * DATE OF PUBLICATION * PAGE NUMBER(S) (For articles from magazines, journals, periodicals, newspapers, encyclopedias, or in anthologies). See samples for writing a bibliography included in report booklet. Report Points ( 90-100 =O, 80- 89=S+, 70-79=S, 60-69=S- ) Title Page: 5 (sections can be rewritten once to improve score) Rough Draft: 40 (may be in print, curisve, or typed by student) Final Report Copy: 40 (neatness counts) Bibliography: 10 Illustration: 5Back to Top
