Third Grade
 ***
I do not assign homework over vacation breaks...read for pleasure instead and please enjoy this time with your families!  If your child has not completed the lower case cursive packet...that can be finished and turned in on November 30th.  We will be finished with capital letters in a few weeks. -Ms. Minsart

Schedule
Students have now begun second trimester Language Arts Breakout Groups.  Each activity is an opportunity for students to work in similar ability groups for reading/language learning, whether it is for enrichment or additional review.  Students will also prepare for Standardized testing by answering questions related to independent reading in our online Accelerated Reader Program.  Your child may also take quizzes at home for points and prizes by logging on at nwds.org (under Mr. Steele’s computer lab page...Accelerated Reading is found under “Links”).  Your child has a user name (generally first initial with three letters of the last name) and our third grade password is “nwds”.   The second trimester student goal is 12 points.  This trimester it will also be computed into the student grade for Reading.

Can You Help At Home?
We are planning a classroom project to sew our own quilt.  Each student will plan to decorate one square.  The squares are now cut, but it would help to keep the squares from unraveling if someone has a “Serger” sewing machine to bind the edges.  Another option would be a zig-zag stitch around the edges of the canvas squares on a regular sewing machine.  Thanks if you can help...just send a note and I will sent the blank squares home with your child.

Also...
We are still collecting Boxtops for Education and Soup Labels for Education (whole Campbell’s or Swanson’s soup can label) for second trimester.  Thanksgiving cooking may also provide many label opportunities.  We are
also collecting Thanksgiving types of cans and boxes of food to help our school put together Sharing Baskets before Christmas.

Conferences
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me for your child’s conference.  I especially appreciated meeting with each family and sharing the progress your child is making and answering any question about social or academic growth. This is a warm and caring group of students who really enjoy learning and it shows in their effort and work habits!

SCIENCE
We are ending our unit study of habitats with an important part of the ecosystem... decomposition!  Mrs. Rappeport is doing experiments with germs in petri dishes with students and we are trying to grow mold on moist bread in sealed bags...with no luck so far...Hmmmmm....we wonder why????  We have also recycled our habitat soil for a future  classroom worm composting  bin.  We will add red worms in December!

Math
Our next classroom party will be building gingerbread multiplication houses in December...more info later!

Thank you for your continued support and keeping our school needs in mind over the holidays,
