Hello Families

On Thursday, June 7th, we will be going on a field trip to Fire Station #1 on Carrillo Street!  We will be walking.  Please join us if you can!

In Language Arts we have started a new unit on Animals.  We are reviewing the letters and sounds that we have learned this year so far and we have added our next alphafriend Jumping Jill.  Ask your child about him and see if s/he can tell you the letter, sound, or words that begin with the letter J.  We are also writing more on our own in class, trying to sound out words using the skills we have learned.  At this point in the year the students should start their sentences with a capital letter, end with a period or exclamation point, and spell word wall words correctly.  Now when you see their journals we are transitioning from guided writing to free writing.  I am so proud of their work!!!

In math we are reviewing many of the concepts we learned from the year.

In Science we are learning about butterflies and their lifecycle.  Ask your child what they can tell you about them!

We are wrapping up the year by reviewing a lot of the concepts we have learned this year.  Homework will be ending at the end of the month.  There will be no more homework for the year.  I will have a summer activity packet for your child to work on over the summer.

Have a great week!

Blessings,

Mrs. Maxwell

Attendance-school starts at 8:00.  Much of our learning will take place together in class.  We do lots of hands-on activities and group work.  Please plan to attend school every day, except in case of illness or emergency.

Book orders-just about once a month, a book order form will come home from Scholastic.  This is a great way to purchase books inexpensively, while helping our class earn extra points towards other items!  Birthdays-your child’s special day is important to us!  If your child is having a birthday and you would like to send in a treat, you are more than welcome to do so!  Please contact me in advance to make arrangements.

Communication-communication is the key to a successful parent-teacher relationship.  Please feel free to contact me by e-mail or call me at school with questions or concerns at any time.  You can also send a note in your child’s MONKEY folder.

Dismissal-school ends at 3:00.  Please notify the office or me if your child is to go home a different way than his/her normal schedule.

Emergencies-please make sure we have the correct emergency numbers and information on file!

Field Trips-our class will be participating in field trips this year.  If you would like to chaperone one of these trips, please let me know!  Permission slips must be returned for your child to attend.

Gym-please make sure your child is dressed appropriately so he/she can participate in gym/P.E.

Homework-your child will have homework Mondays through Thursdays in their MONKEY folder.  It will go home Monday night and needs to be returned Friday.

Important Information-if you have any important papers that need to come to school, please send them in the Banana Bag in your child’s MONKEY folder.  The MONKEY folder should come to school every day!

Just ask-if you ever have any questions or concerns, please ask and I will be more than happy to assist you.

Kindness-we will learn about being kind to others and to ourselves every day.

Lunch-our lunch is from 12:00-12:40 Monday-Thursday and 12:45 on Fridays.  Students will sign in every morning by placing their attendance stick in the cold or hot lunch jar.  Silvergreens is our hot lunch provider, the school website has more information on how to order.

Money-when sending money to school, please put it in the Banana Bag in their MONKEY folder.

Newsletters-with class updates and classroom happenings will be on the website weekly.

Open House-please plan to attend this event to learn more about daily classroom activities, policies, and to see our classroom!  It is scheduled for August 25th from 6-7.

Parties-if you would like to help with a class party or provide snacks or favors, please let me know!  There will be a sign-up sheet at Open House.

Quick and Quiet Hellos-if you volunteer in our classroom or school, I will urge your child to acknowledge you with a “quick and quiet” wave hello.  It is important for them to greet you, but remain involved in class activities.

Reading-students are expected to read or be read to every night as part of their nightly homework.

Snazzy Snacks-about once a month we’ll practice our handwriting and math skills by making a tasty “Snazzy Snack”!  You can sign up at Open House to provide ingredients for one snack.

Tardies-students should be at school by 8:00.  Arriving after this time causes students to lose valuable instructional time.

Unique-every child is unique in their own special way!

Volunteers-we love volunteers!  Moms, dads, grandparents…you can volunteer in class or work on things for class at home.  Please let me know if you’d like to help so we can find a classroom job for you!

Website-please be sure to visit our website often.  I will make changes on a regular basis.

X-tra-every child has an x-tra special spot in my heart!

You-you are a very important part in your child’s education!

Zzzz-make sure your child gets enough sleep every night!
