The Pilgrims
In 1620, a group of people boarded a ship called the Mayflower and set sail for the New World.
This group, which was later known as the Pilgrims, arrived two months later in a cold, hostile land.
The first year was so difficult that only 51 or 102 Pilgrims survived the first winter. Today, the
Pilgrims are honored for their courage. Despite all the hardships, they proved that people could
govern themselves without kings or queens.
