Homework is written daily on the board. Students are expected to write their assignments in their planner each day. Assignments, unless otherwise stated, are due the next day. Incomplete homework does not just "go away." It should be completed and turned in the following day. Missing homework assignments will be listed on that week's Friday Letter. Homework is practice at home that helps to reinforce skills and concepts learned in the classroom. Students will typically have homework Monday through Thursday, with the exception of long term projects which may need to be completed during the weekends depending upon the student's time management and schedule. These projects will be given with ample time to be completed. Students in 5th grade may expect to spend 60 to 90 minutes per night, including the 20 minutes of independent reading. Research shows the single most valuable activity for developing children's reading comprehension is reading itself. Parents should recognize that the amount of time spent on homework reflects the child's ability and work/study habits. On the report card, homework counts for a maximum of 25% of the student's academic grades and a majority of the effort/work habits sections. Please assist us in the following ways: *SUPPORT the concept that homework is important, providing a distraction-free study area and the supplies needed to complete assignments; *ENCOURAGE your child to complete the work but NOT DO IT FOR HIM/HER; and, *LET ME KNOW if your child experiences difficulties with the work. *TOGETHER we can develop those all important time management skills we all need to be successful! Homework assignments could include any or all of the following: *Finishing work assigned during the regular school day *Tasks which reinforce skills previously taught *Long-term assignments such as book reports, research projects, and collaborative projects *Weekly assignments such as spelling, vocabulary study, and math facts
