October 2, 2009
Dear Families,
As part of our curriculum, your student will be doing several book reports
this year. We will use a different format for each report and they will be
assigned in five different literary genres. Books may come from your home
library, the school or classroom libraries, the public library or borrowed
from a friend. However, the book must be approved by the teacher for the
appropriate reading level. The book must be one that has NOT been read
before or listened to by the student. All of the time a student spends
reading their book report book may be counted as part of the nightly Reading
Log requirements.
A week before each report is due, directions for the book report format and
grading rubric will be passed out so that students will have plenty of time
to complete the task by the due date. Remember, the book report project
should be completed by the student with minimal assistance from the
parent(s). The genres and due dates for the year are:
Fantasy/Science Fiction, due Friday, October 30, 2009
Non-fiction, due Friday, December 4, 2009
Mystery, due Friday, January 29, 2010
Historical Fiction, due Friday, March 5, 2010
American Hero Biography, due Friday, April 23, 2010
Students, your first book must be approved by me no later than Monday,
October 12th. Please fill out a Book Report Book Approval form and return it
to me on or before that date. Keep this letter in your binder or another
safe place so you’ll be able to refer to it throughout the year. It is also
posted on our classroom website. If you have any questions, be sure to talk
to me well BEFORE the report due date.
Happy reading!
Mrs. Jeffries
