The Enlightenment was a sprawling intellectual, philosophical, cultural, and
social movement that spread through England, France, Germany, and other parts
of Europe during the 1700s.
ENLIGHTENMENT

The French and the English were competing for land and trading rights in North
America; these strivings resulted in a great deal of disputed land,
particularly that of the rich Ohio Valley.
FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

Throughout most of the history of the American colonies up until the
mid-eighteenth century, the colonists had been allowed to live in relative
isolation under a policy called salutary neglect.
PRE-REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA

The The Declaration of Independence, completed and signed in July of 1776,
marked the official separation between the 13 colonies and Great Britain.
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

State governments established, Americans realized the need for a national
government to take on responsibility for diplomatic representation and
military control.
NATION BUILDING

As the first official document that defined the United States government, the
Articles of Confederation both reflected the ideals and philosophies of the
American Revolution and highlighted the practical difficulties of democratic
government.
THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION

Sensing the need for change, delegates from nearly all the states met in 1787
to revise the Articles of Confederation but ended up drafting an entirely new
document: the Constitution.
CONSTITUTION

This document (the Federalist) will provide all the reasons to support the new
plan of government described in the U.S. Constitution, and responses to each
of the criticisms of the plan.
