Knowledge of word families is one tool that helps students with decoding (sounding out) unknown words while reading. In order to successfully sound out most words, student need to be able to chunk words, or break them up into parts, such as onsets and rimes (beginning and ending parts: black ---> bl (onset) ack (rime). This knowledge will also aid in spelling skills (For example, if they can spell black they can spell back).
