FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions parents may have about Room 13.
Can my child celebrate his/her birthday in class? Yes, the choice is yours. You may bring a simple snack (donut, cupcake, fruit, cookie etc.) that will be passed out at recess. We will sing to your child regardless of whether a snack is provided or not. Occasionally. If you do decide to order, please pay with a check made out to the book club, not to me. You may also order on-line at scholastic.com/bookclubs with a credit card. Select Parent Sign In. The user name is swagertyroom13 and the password is bookorder. If more than one form is sent home, it is OK to make out just one check to Scholastic. What does my child need to do if s/he is late for school? Your child must check into the office if the bell has already rung (8:15 or 9:05) to receive a blue admit slip. I will have to send the child back to the office to get one, so time is saved if the child gets one first. Who do I notify if my child is going to be absent? Please notify me AND the office. If your child is going to be gone on a family trip for five or more days, s/he must be placed on independent study. See Chris or Joan for the form. What do I do if I must take my child out of school for an appointment? Please check your child out in the office first. Chris or Joan will call the classroom and I will send your child up to the office. When are parent/teacher conferences? Conferences are held in November, with an optional one in the spring. During these times you will be given your child's report card, and we will view and discuss your child's work as well as his/her interactions in class. If you feel a conference is necessary some other time, please call of email so we can set up a meeting. I will also call you if I think we need to meet. How much homework will my child have? Twenty five minutes of reading plus a single or double-sided worksheet related to what we are covering in class will be assigned Monday-Friday. Are there volunteer opportunities? Yes. Parents are needed to help in class with Writer's Workshop, math, spelling, and art. In addition, one or more parents are needed to serve as room parents to coordinate parties, field trip drivers, lice checkers, and anything that the PTA may require. How often does my child have PE? The students have PE with district specialist, Debbie Benson, once a week. If your child is not able to participate for any reason, please send in a note that I can pass on to her. In addition, we take several breaks to stretch and take a run throughout the day. |
