Reading

The reading goal for this class is to instill a love for reading and to make “reading a habit.”  The reading program will promote the enjoyment of a variety of literature.  This includes the Houghton Mifflin anthology, content area reading, poetry, and a range of ability-leveled chapter books.  I will stress reading strategies for word recognition and story comprehension.  In addition to literature, students will use information sources such as encyclopedias, atlases, thesauruses, and current events magazines like "Time For Kids".  Independent reading will be assessed through our computer program; "Reading Counts."  Students will also hear the teacher read aloud as well as receive amounts of independent reading time in class.

Below is an online resource for parents and students for our language arts textbook by Houghton Mifflin. This is an extremely valuable tool especially to help build vocabulary and a better understanding of the concepts taught in class. I highly encourage all of you to check out this site to help your child and you better understand the stories we are reading each week, the vocabulary they are expected to learn, and the grammar skills. Click on Reading/Language Arts and "choose" the Houghton Mifflin Reading text. Then select third grade.  Happy Surfing!
