English Language Resources

Some ideas to help your child develop the English Language
  1. Let your child watch "high-quality" American t.v shows (this will develop language). Try watching television with "close caption" button.
  2. Join the public library (this will give your child access to books on tape, videos, and many different genres, types of books)
  3. Have your child read both "picture books" and books that are at your child's ability level (this will increase vocabulary skills and success in reading comprehension)
  4. Buy books on tape (this will help accustom your child to hearing and understanding the English language as well as the emotions of the characters)
  5. Have your child join an organization like Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, or a team activity (this will help develop friendships, sportsmanship, and will increase their speaking ability)
  6. Invite English speaking friends over (this will develop friendships and verbal ability)
  7. Get a list of tutors available from the district (this will help your child receive the one-on-one help needed in a specific area)
  8. Enroll your child in a creative writing class (this will help with grammar skills and the writing process)
  9. Buy computer software or videos that support language and concept development (this will help with comprehension of concepts and enhance vocabulary)
  10. Have your child keep a book journal where they can keep track of new vocabulary (this will help in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and dictionary skills)
  11. Take an Adult Language Class through the district or at a community college (this will help you to learn the language with your child and you wil be a positive role-model)
  12. Read out loud with your child (this will show your child that you, too, are willing to take risks learning the English language and you will be able to discuss together the story and increase reading comprehension)

Above all, PRAISE YOUR CHILD'S SUCCESSES AND ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR EFFORTS (this will build their self-confidence and let them know you love them)

MS. KATSUDA'S RECOMMENDATION TO ENSURE SUCCESSFUL ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING: Please buy a dictionary that is suitable for third-grade level. The Scholastic Dictionary in our book orders is a wonderful choice! Make sure your child has this dictionary accessible and is using this tool FREQUENTLY when reading. It builds your child's vocabulary, spelling, and is an especially valuable tool if your child is speaking another language at home.
