Homework

Homework is a vital part of our school program. Homework will be assigned daily and corrected the following morning.  There will be no homework on Fridays and weekends, except on special circumstances. On average, each child should spend approximately 30-45 minutes completing math, language arts, and science/social studies skills. In addition, reading independently each night for 30 minutes and studying basic math facts either with flashcards or on a math website (see "links" for suggestions) for 10 minutes a day is required.

Here are some guidelines that will help your child with homework in third grade:

  • Help your child establish either a consistent schedule for completing homework or help him/her create a schedule each Sunday night that reflects that particular week’s activities.
  • Help set up a consistently quiet and organized place for homework to be done.
  • Encourage, motivate, and prompt your child, but do not sit with him/her and do the homework with your child. The purpose of the homework is for your child to practice and use what has been learned. If your child is consistently not able to do the homework independently, please contact me.
  • Review your child's homework for accuracy (not all problems are necessary but select some problems at a glance). If your child makes a mistake, ask your child to review the problem more carefully and if your child still doesn't understand his/her mistake, review the problem, and clarify the mistake to encourage better understanding.
  • Although there might be exceptions, the minutes your child should spend on homework should equal approximately 10 times his/her grade level (a 2nd grader would spend 20 minutes, a 3rd grader, 30, and so on).
  • When bedtime comes, please stop your child, even if he/she is not done.

If your child is consistently unable to complete the daily homework in the 30-40 minute timeframe, please contact me to discuss alternative solutions.
