Here are some suggestions to help extend your learning over your
Fall Vacation.
Relaxing, daydreaming, playing, and visiting our class website "Links" are encouraged, too!
· Practice math flashcards (addition, subtraction, and multiplication, if you're ready) while you’re riding in the car. Suggested purchase: multiplication and division flashcards. Also visit math websites for math fact games.
· Make change when shopping, estimate how much groceries will cost before you cash out, determine the type of weather based on temperature, or help measure ingredients while cooking (double the recipe).
· Reading Counts- Students are expected to read 3 books at their Lexile range and Reading Level and be ready to take quizzes upon our return in October. Note: Children are allowed to take books home from our classroom library to read over vacation. However, please make sure they don't get lost or damaged. Thanks!
· Continue to read independently EVERYDAY!
· Also choose a chapter book for your parents to read to you. Discuss the story with your family.
· Practice your cursive. Keep a writing journal or write to friends and family. Send the class a postcard over vacation. (
· Create spelling games with this quarter’s spelling words. Find spelling words all around you (books, signs, computer programs, cereal boxes).
· We will continue studying land formations and learning about California Native Americans as well as local Orange County Native American tribes when we return. To get a head start, find information about Unit 2 on Native Americans on the social studies website.
· Visit historical sites or land/waterforms in
· Practice reading maps of places you visit. This will better help you understand geography.
· Continue to study living things and their structures. Grow a plant/garden, observe animals, read books, or write a report. Next quarter, we will be learning about the sun, the moon, and the stars. Check out the science website for more information.

· Make change when shopping, estimate how much groceries will cost before you cash out, determine the type of weather based on temperature, or help measure ingredients while cooking (double or triple the recipe).
· Practice math flashcards for mastery (all multiplication and division facts are expected to be mastered upon January arrival).
· Tell time using an analog watch. Calculate time to the next hour or determine minutes passed the hour.
· Our upcoming units of focus will be on 3-digit multiplication, fractions, decimals, geometry, and measurement. Please integrate any real-life situation using these skills.

· Continue to read EVERYDAY! Keep a writing journal. Write in cursive.

· Choose a chapter book to read together with your children. Discuss the story, focusing on the characters, setting, problem/solution and conclusion.
· Read appropriate current events from the newspaper with your children. Discuss the article, focusing on pulling out the main idea and supporting details.
