Math

Our math goal is to promote mathematical power in all students. Students will be challenged with real-world problems that require questioning, visualizing, and deciding which strategies to use. They will learn to communicate their ideas effectively and with confidence.  Basic computational skills such as advanced addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division will be emphasized.

Math "Timed" Tests are between 2-3 minutes long depending on the difficulty. They will be given every Tuesday and Thursday. As part of the daily homework requirement (see homework link), each child is to study or practice their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts for 10 minutes a day. This can either be done with flashcards or on a math website (see links).

For first quarter, we will only be testing for addition and subtraction fact mastery. For second quarter, it will be multiplication facts. Finally, in the third quarter, it will be division facts. In each week's conduits, you will find your child's graded math timed tests for the week. If your child is not receiving a passing score on these timed tests, please make sure your child study for more than 10 minutes a day.

Below is an online resource for parents and students for our new math textbook, Math Expressions. I highly encourage all of you to check out this site to help you better understand the new and innovative ways your children are currently learning math, specifically with proof drawings, etc. Click on 3rd grade and see "Math Background" for an overview of each Unit.
