About the Teacher

The 2009-2010 school year will mark my thirteenth year teaching in the
Carlsbad Unified School District. I began teaching seventh and eighth grade
at Valley Junior High. The following year, I relocated to Buena Vista and
taught sixth grade. In 1999, Pacific Rim opened its doors, and I was given
the opportunity to teach first grade. I have been teaching first grade ever
since. I love everything about it! The social, academic and personal
changes that take place during this one year are phenomenal.

I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of La Verne, and I did my
credential work at Chapman University. I live in south Carlsbad and usually
see lots of students and their families around town.

And one last thing....
It will be more than obvious during football season, but just a warning:
I am a HUGE Packer fan!

Personal Philosophy of Education

Education is as much a part of life as walking, talking and breathing.
Growing brains are shaped by experience, and it is my responsibility as a
teacher to provide opportunities for a variety of rich, hands-on
experiences. Technology has provided us with a huge amount of accessible
information through a variety of mediums. This allows all children, whatever
their learning style, many opportunities to learn. Technology is a key part
of the curriculum. I also believe that I must establish a partnership with
each child's family because they play an essential role in the total
learning experience of their child.

Children need to take responsibility for their own learning, no matter what
their age. They need to know how to deal with the plateaus of success and the
valleys of failure. I intend to guide them through the learning process by
using problem solving strategies. My ultimate goal is not to teach children
how to be successful on an exam, but rather to teach them the skills
necessary for the challenges that they will face in the future.
