My Dearest 8th Graders (though I accidentally graduated you all to 7th Grade
on your report cards),
you
have two written assignments due by the end of this summer. Both are listed
below, and will also be
added to my homework page at qasconcord.org. The official date to start these
assignments will be
July
6th. The papers are both due by the first full day of school, though I will
accept any papers from
August
1st if you wish to submit them early.

Paper 1 (length: 2-3 pages)

What scientific evidence is there to back up an argument to not teach
creationism (God creating the
world in 7 days) in schools? At the moment in most school systems, the idea
that God created the
world in 7 days is not taught. You job is to provide evidence for either side
of the argument.

There are ample resources that can be found on the Internet to back up both
cases. I warn you to do
your research, and come to a thorough conclusion, and to not just believe the
first article that you
read.
You will find that there are many scientists that wish to express their
feelings on this topic.

I want to let you do your own research, before I provide any Internet sites.
By next Friday, you will
receive a few suggestions from me, but you should have definitely started by then.

Be sure to keep a record of the Internet sites that you visit so that you will
have all the information
you
need for your bibliography.

Paper 2 (length: 1 page)

Do you think, God having some part in the creation of the universe, should be
taught in schools as
another theory apart from evolution without God? Within your answer, you
should take into account
the
writings in the constitution that make it clear that there must be a
separation of church and state.
This
essentially means that the government cannot have an attachment to the church
or any other religion
when they make their decisions. Every American is free to worship is any way
that they wish, but the
government must be a separate entity, based solely on law.

In this opinion paper, you should use the first half of the page to sum up the
argument, and the
second
half of the paper to express your opinion. A bibliography should also be
attached to this paper.
