Every Friday I will be sending home a newsletter that is specific to our class
and current school happenings. Please make sure to check your child’s
Important papers folder every Friday.
December 04, 2009
Reminder: Christmas Vacation is December 21 thru Jan. 3; school resumes on Jan. 4, 2010.
We are continuing our study of different fairy/folk tales. This week we read The Gingerbread Man
and made gingerbread cookies. We are also learning about story structure: plot, characters and
setting. When you read to your child; ask who the story is about, where is the story taking place, and
what happened in the story.
We continue our unit on subtraction this week. It is a difficult concept at first, because it is
“backwards” from what we have been doing up to this point. Practice counting down from 20 with
your child; 20, 19, 18,…
This past Sunday began our second week of Advent. Students are learning about waiting and
hoping. We also get ready for Jesus’ birthday. We are introducing various traditions such as the
Advent wreath, and leaving shoes out for St. Nicholas.
The phone number to reach me at is 925-685-8700 ext 3200. This will take you directly to my
voicemail so as not to interrupt class. I will check it several times a day.

Our Christmas party will be on Friday, December 18th following P.E. at 11:00. It is an early day, so
we will keep refreshments light. Let me know if you can bring anything in to share.

Sight words for this week are: she, like, his, all, they, and Jesus. The sight words consist of flash
cards and a writing sheet. The students are doing a great job learning them.

The weather is now colder. Please make sure to send your child in a coat each day.
Please make sure to check the class website often. I strive to keep it up to date and will post
additions regularly. This newsletter is available online there as well.
Katie Lim was student of the week this week. We enjoyed the pictures she shared with us all week.
During the week of Dec.14th, we will be honoring Vincent Madrigal as student of the week.

Rainy Days: Please have your child come straight to the classroom on rainy days. Drop them off in
front of the porch and they can then walk themselves to the classroom.
Please email or make me a CD of any photos you have taken during the year so that I can post them
on the website.

Beginning January 4th, we will no longer be serving snacks as a group. In order to transition to what
the students will be expecting in First Grade, each student must bring their own snack and lunch. It
is easier if you pack them in separate bags. Snacks should include a simple treat and a drink.
Reminder: Do not send money in with your child to purchase a lunch without ordering on online
through Children’s Choice. Even if you have an account with them, there is no guarantee that there
will be enough emergency lunches available.
During the cold and flu season, please remind your child to wash their hands regularly. Do not send
your child to school if they are ill or have a bad cough.
Homework: Please check your child’s homework daily. Names should be written neatly on all work. I
look at the homework daily to check that students understand the material presented in class.
Encourage your student to do their best work.
Students will need to bring a paper sack, preferably with a handle, to school next week to carry all
their Christmas “stuff” home. Please send in the paper bags by Thursday, Dec. 17th.

A new weekly progress report is in your child’s Important papers folder this week. Please make sure
to look at it carefully. Beginning with the 2nd Trimester, it will show areas that need extra attention
and areas your child is doing well in.
