1st - Summer Reading

INCOMING FIRST GRADERS
First Grade Summer Reading List
(Please see 2nd Summer Reading List for students entering 2nd grade)

One of the best things you can do this summer to prepare your child for
school is to read lots and lots of books aloud to your child. According to
Jim Trelease "reading aloud stimulates a child's imagination, stretches their
attention span, improves their listening comprehension, nurtures their
emotional development, establishes a reading-writing connection, and reshapes
their negative attitudes into positive ones." Children of all ages enjoy
being read to and reading to children at an early age encourages them to want
to read on their own.
This is just a partial list of recommended books. The books listed are
available at the public library. Furthermore, the
children's librarian can help you select other interesting books to read to
your child. Please make sure that the books your child reads are age and
reading-level appropriate.
Take your children to the public library so they can get their own library
cards. By visiting the library, children will find other books of interest,
and the library cards are free.

Reading.)
