Mrs. Ogden grew up in Pleasant Hill, CA. She is a graduate of Christ
the King School (Pleasant Hill) and Carondelet High School.
Mrs. Ogden received her BA at CSU, Sacramento as a Liberal Studies
Major. Upon graduation, she worked full time for Cigna P & C
(Insurance) and then spent three years in sales with Nestle (yes, she
had chocolate on hand at all times!). Finally, in 1997,
she returned to her true passion, teaching, and decided to head full
time into the classroom. Mrs. Ogden attended St. Mary's College in
Moraga for her teaching credential.
The past 12 years at Queen of All Saints have brought many blessings
her way. She has been impressed by the academic and spiritual
growth of her students, and loves when graduates return from high
school, and college, to visit and share their accomplishments!
In addition to teaching Math and Religion, Mrs. Ogden has been the
Student Government Advisor for the past 11 years. She
truly enjoys working with the students on their leadership skills and
helping them to plan and organize QAS student body activities.
QUEEN OF ALL SAINTS
RELIGION and MATH CURRICULUM
GRADES SIX, SEVEN AND EIGHT
2009-2010
Mrs. Penny Ogden
RELIGION:
There is an emphasis on prayer as well as a continuous study of the Bible and scripture throughout
the junior high curriculum. I encourage every student to participate during our daily discussions and
activities. Students will take turns leading their classmates in prayer and sharing special intentions.
We will meet monthly in Faith Families, composed of students from grades K-8. Junior high
students will be responsible for leading activities and setting a positive example. There will be
ongoing service learning/community service projects throughout the school year.
Student will study and experience the four pillars in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
1. The Profession of Faith (What Catholics Believe)
2. The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (How Catholics Worship)
3. Life In Christ (How Catholics Live)
4. Christian Prayer (How Catholics Pray)
The emphasis of study for each grade level is as follows:
Eighth Grade: History of the Catholic Church
Seventh Grade: The Story of Jesus
Sixth Grade: The Old Testament
I invite you to check out the Blest Are We website (www.blestarewe.com). You will find valuable
information for parents, kids and teens.
FYI: If you still need a Bible, I recommend the
Fireside Catholic Youth Bible ISBN Number: 1-55665-454-5
MATH:
Sixth Grade: We will be exploring Number Sense (including decimal concepts) Statistics and
Graphing, Fraction Concepts, Introduction to Algebra (integers and equations), Geometry, Ratio,
Proportion, Percent, Probability and more. We are using the Harcourt series (California Edition). The
format of this text reflects a complete and balanced math program, and was developed following
California State Standards for Mathematics. The students are given the opportunity for review and
standardized test preparation throughout each chapter, while simultaneously being introduced to
new concepts.
Seventh Grade: Prentice Hall – Pre-Algebra: We will cover content mandated by the California
Standards, with an emphasis on working with numbers and equations and understanding the
underlying mathematics principles. We begin the year studying integers.
Eighth Grade: Prentice Hall- Algebra 1: We will cover content mandated by the California Standards.
There is an emphasis on writing and solving equations. Mathematical reasoning is interwoven
throughout. We begin the year with a solid review of pre-algebra skills.
Prentice Hall Mathematics has created a web site, which corresponds with the text so that students
can check their progress and take chapter self tests on-line (www.phschool.com). There is a list of
math links provided on the site, where students can challenge themselves with a math problem of
the week, or ask “Dr. Math” a question, play math games and puzzles, etc.
We have a student tutorial CD-ROM available for seventh and eighth graders who would like some
extra practice, which gives students step-by-step examples to guide them through the solution
process.

HOMEWORK:
Homework will be given as needed for both Math & Religion. Religion homework is often an
extension of class work, i.e., if your student does not finish their work in class it will become
homework. Math homework is usually given 4 days a week, and students will often be given class
time to begin their work. This also allows students extra time for individual help and clarification.
NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED, except for those assignments handed in late due to illness
or excused absence. I do not give homework on Fridays unless absolutely necessary!
TESTS/QUIZZES:
Math Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. The tests will cover information we have
discussed and practiced daily, through completion of both classroom exercises and homework.
Students take “1 Minute Quizzes” 2-3 times per week. These quick, 5 pt. tests are a great way to
practice and review skills. Periodically, students will be given a Ten Point Quiz (TPQ). We will review
for the TPQ together, in class. The questions on a TPQ will frequently be taken straight from
homework. Other quizzes may be given as needed, and students will be told in advance so that they
may have time to study and prepare. Announced quizzes will be worth twenty to thirty points.
GRADING: Based on the following Point System:
In Class Assignments & Homework*: 5-10 points each
Quizzes and “TPQ”: 5-30 points each
Tests: 80-110 points each
Participation: 30 pts. per Trimester
Notebook: 25 points
Additional Projects: To Be Announced
*Note: All class work & homework in math will receive full credit (5 or 10 points) as long as strong
effort is shown on each. Students will not be marked off for each incorrect answer, but they must
attempt to answer each question to receive full credit. Incomplete work will be marked accordingly,
ranging from 0 – 7 points (no higher than a “C”).
Papers which show a lack of understanding may be returned to the student with the message: "RFFC"
which means: "Re-do For Full Credit" and a score of 5/10 or 2/5. In this case, the low score can be
changed to full credit (10/10 or 5/5) upon completion of the assignment (students only need to re-
do the incorrect problems). The corrections must be attached to the original, and returned to Mrs.
Ogden to receive full credit.

I want to help my students achieve success, and I have tremendous confidence in their abilities.
It is crucial that students meet with me immediately if they are experiencing challenges in math, and
they will be encouraged often to seek my additional help. Please feel free to contact me any time
with questions or concerns. I will continue to pray for you and your children and ask that you pray
for all of the students and staff of Queen of All Saints. Together, with Christ’s loving care, we will
accomplish great things this year! God Bless,
Penny Ogden
