Medieval World History Day - Friday - May 31st was a huge success!!

2013 Medieval History Day Photos
Thank you parents who came and volunteered and to parents who donated water, pretzels, cookies, banana chips, or apricots. The students really enjoyed their snacks and especially the water.

A great time was had by all. Photos will be up on this site sometime next week. The students costumes were terrific and their enthusiasm for the day was awesome.
They began their 4 Worlds Biography Presentations in their homerooms in the afternoon, but we did not get to finish. Presentations will be finished this week.

History Day Costume Information

Last week I had three homework clubs to work on projects and costumes. This week, I will have a homework club "hat workshop" on Tuesday from 3 to 4 pm.

Students brought home donations/volunteer requests for Medieval History Day.
We could use a few more volunteers and donations of bottled water, pretzels, banana chips, shortbread cookies, cinnamon twists cookies. Email me at
mnies@wiseburn.k12.ca.us  if you would like to participate or donate. :-)

Students and parents: Please see above links for ideas for your costumes.  Note: This is a costume; not a new outfit. Do NOT go out and spend a lot of money on it and do NOT rent a costume. Ms. Nies has some material to help you make a costume. On this form are ideas for costumes and at the bottom descriptions of what you might use/wear.

I will have three (maybe four) homework clubs next week: Monday 3-4:30; Tuesday 2-4; Thursday 3-4; and Friday if needed 3-4. During homework club we can work on costumes and biography projects too.

Tuesday is Open House - More information coming on times. Classroom time begins at 6:30. I would like students to come with their families and demonstrate/ discuss social studies work for this year. Please discuss what time you might be able to come and join us.

We will have volunteer sign ups out for History Day - including coming to set up or supervise games and donations of water and snacks (from Trader Joe's - we have a list of "medieval like" snacks). Hope to see you Tuesday night!

The lords and ladies representing our team's homerooms are:
902 Mr. Williams - Kingdom of Scotland
Lionel, Dajah

302 Mrs. Jeffrey - Kingdom of Naples
Donnell, Sabrina

502 - Mrs. Irvin - Kingdom of Sicily
Nathan, Alexa B.

202 - Mrs. Staal - Kingdom of Castile
Pablo, Julia

805 - Mrs. Carpenter and Mr. Jaffe - Kingdom of Denmark
Mark, Natalie C.

Congratulations on being terrific social studies students and for demonstrating chivalrous attitudes at Dana! We will be trying on and selecting our "royal" robes next week.

Student Led Conferences were a huge success again this year, our fifth.

Students shared their e-portfolio websites. They will be continuing to upload work from Google Docs including documents, presentations, and drawings to this site. In addition, we are beginning to write our learning target summaries on the website.

Welcome to my website for 2012-2013. I am expecting a terrific year in social studies. Students will be exploring and learning history from the middle ages in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Every year I reset the "visitors" counter. In the 2012-2013 school year, this site was visited over 14,000 times. Amazing! For 2012-2013, let our journey begin!!

Ms. Nies
