Star Testing Schedule in our class:
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, May 9, 10, and 11th for Reading and Language 
Arts (grammar) 8:30 till 9:55 am

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, May 16, 17, and 18th for Math - 8:30 till 
9:55 am

Students need good sleeping habits, morning breakfast, unhurried mornings, 
and a good attitude to succeed. Have them repeat the chant, “I can, I will 
succeed!” and ask them about the shirts they decorated today…

Math Review:
Go over subtraction with them at home this week. Work through borrowing and 
carrying with them so they remember the steps. Go over and review basic 
multiplication facts, subtraction facts, and addition facts. Ask them to 
solve problems where they have to figure out which operation (+, -, x, etc.) 
they have to use to solve the problem. {I have 35 carrots and you take 25. 
How many do we have left? I used subtraction to figure out the problem.}

Ask which number is greater or less than another. {23 is less than 54; 63 is 
greater than 45} Give a number and ask which digit is in ten’s place or one’s 
place. {72 – 7 is in the ten’s place; 86 – 6 is in the one’s place, etc.} Ask 
them to write a three digit number you tell them to write for you, etc. You 
say, ‘Three hundred and twenty-five” – child writes 325}

Go over and review measurement – how many inches in a foot – how many in 2 
feet, etc. Ask how many cups in a quart, how many in two quarts, etc. Ask if 
you’d measure something in feet, cups, or pounds. Ask how many vertices 
(corners) there are in various shapes. How many edges, sides, or faces does 
this can of tomatoes have; does this box of cereal have?

Water Bottles:
Students need water more now that the weather has gotten hotter. They each 
were given one bottle of water to refill as needed, but many don’t like the 
taste of school water. They are free to bring a bottle of water from home if 
they would prefer.

Clothing:
Please dress in cooler clothing. Clothes and shoes need to be able to run the 
track, allow them to sit comfortably on the floor or during testing. A light 
jacket or hoodie is all they need for now as by recess, it is hot outside, 
but allows them something lightweight to wear in the classroom if they get 
chilled. Hats and sunglasses or other valuable items should stay home if they 
are for decorative purposes as they just get played with and usually taken 
away till end of day. Sandals not allowed at school for safety reasons and 
make it hard to participate in PE. Boots are hard for the students to run in 
outside or for PE and makes it hard to sit on the floor to do small group 
activities.

                   (Tickets already on sale for event.)
June 7th – Open House
June 9th – Tentative Field Trip 
(Parents needed – Cost will be about $15/notice to go home with exact 
information)

June 11th – Multicultural Day 
(Children encouraged to wear any traditional cultural costumes they may have 
at home.)

June 14th – Parade of Nations – All school field day (8:30 am)
June 19th – Field Day (Second Grade) – need parents to help
June 20th – Last Day of School/min day – Report Cards go home

Note:
Students are not assigned a teacher until first day of school. There is a 
notice out on the library windows to let you know to whom your child will be 
assigned. This is usually posted about a week before school starts. If your 
child is going to another school next year, please contact that office as 
they may do the notifications differently.

Curriculum:
As the school year winds down, we will begin finishing up many of our 
workbooks. I have explained to the class that because the book is done, we 
aren’t. First, we will go over and review many of the items we have done this 
year. Then, I will go into some beginning 3rd grade curriculum to give them a 
head start, and we will be doing a lot of writing. We also have Open House to 
prep for so that will also take up a lot of time. Please let your child know, 
we aren’t done till the last day so to keep doing their best. There will be 
homework till the last week, along with spelling lists, reading tests, and 
special projects.

Volunteers:
Parent help is especially wanted and needed as the end of the year comes to a 
close. Please let me know if you can help with field day, Olympics, end of 
year parties, field trip, etc. We can’t participate in some activities 
without the parent help, especially for the field trip.

Jog-a-Thon:
We are still collecting the money as this helps keep our library open for 
next year.
