Quiz and Homework Corrections

September 14, 2009

Today you received your corrected homework packet and your corrected quiz from last week. This page summarizes what actions need to be completed with those papers this week.

Quizzes

If you missed any problem on the quiz besides extra credit you must

  • Rework problem on separate sheet in pencil.
  • If corrections are minimal (eg underlining which operation needs to be performed next), this can be done is red pen on the quiz itself.
  • No marks in pencil should be made on the quiz.
  • For properties, write 1-2 sentences giving advice to yourself in order to keep from making the same mistake in the future. For example, I had the following (wrong) answer to fictitious problem #93
    • 93)    2 x (3 + 4) = (3 + 4) x 2         commutative property of addition
My correction (on a separate sheet of paper) might be

      ”93)    2 x (3 + 4) = (3 + 4) x 2     commutative property of multiplication
The highlighted expression in parentheses didn’t change so the left-hand side of the equation is “2 x ( )” and the right is “( ) x 2”. I see that the order of multiplication is different so I know I’m looking at the commutative property of multiplication.”

These corrections must be turned in by Thursday, September 17.

If you scored < 70% on your quiz, in order to get your score raised you must

·        Complete corrections by Wednesday at lunch

·        Come to a correction session Wednesday at lunch in room 21. We will go over the quiz and check your corrections.

·        Make any additional corrections and turn them in during class on Thursday.

If you need to schedule an alternate time to meet with me, you must set this up before lunch on Wednesday.

No score will be raised higher than 70%.

Homework

When we correct homework in class, it is your responsibility to

  • Mark problems wrong as needed
  • Write all correct answers in red pen on the homework.
  • Complete a “Homework Correction Sheet” if you miss more than 25% of the problems.^

^On this sheet, you must rework at least two problems you got wrong, explaining your mistakes and what you need to do in order to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. The 25% is only a guideline. A homework correction sheet should be filled out whenever your homework indicates you do not have a good understanding of the topic.  For example, your homework consists of 20 integer addition and 20 integer subtraction problems. You get all the addition problems right but miss 10 out of 20 of the subtraction problems. Your overall score is 75% but you only got 50% of the subtraction problems right. You should do a HW correction sheet because it is clear that you don’t understand integer subtraction.

In the packets collected last Friday, I noticed a lot of students who missed problems and didn’t mark them wrong. For example, if the answer was “commutative property of addition” and you only wrote “commutative property”, you have an incomplete or wrong answer and this should be corrected on your homework.

Anyone who has a 0* score listed on their homework checklist may improve that score by making the necessary corrections (in red pen) and/or completing a homework correction form by Thursday, September 17 and turning the packet into the period box by that date. Action to be taken is marked on your pink homework checklist. Be sure your answers are correct; answer keys are available in my classroom. You may come in during break, during the first 10 minutes of lunch, or the first 10 minutes after school to make these corrections. I will re-evaluate your homework based on the corrections and change your score if indicated by your work.
