November 9, 2011Dear Parents and Students,
We have only 5 more days of school until our long winter break. We will be hitting the books hard, trying to master as many phonics and math skills as possible before our long vacation. In addition, we will incorporate a Social Studies and Art unit on Thanksgiving, which is a national holiday. It relates to our State Social Studies standard 1.2.3. This will culminate in our grade level Thanksgiving Feast on Thursday, November 17th.
Phonics: We have learned the long A sound spelling spelled a_e and open syllable a. Words that are a-e include: shake, lame, cave, plate, brake. Words that are open syllable a include table, maple, Mason, staple, awake. We also have learned the /s/ sound spelled ce and ci_. Words include: race, face, cent, cell, city, cinnamon. Please give long A and ce and ci_ words to your child to practice at home. Continue to practice letter digraphs like ch, th, sh, and wh. Give them words to practice reading and writing, like chat, chips, bath, wish, shut, whim. Also, practice words like: well, wet, whip, whir, whiz to illustrate the /w/ and /hw/ sound-spellings. For the /er/ sound-spellings, words include: her, sir, curl, girl, fir, fur, runner, slipper, herd, etc . Practice at home is KEY. Open Court: We have begun a unit called "Our Neighborhood at Work" which is all about community workers such as police officers, doctors, firefighters, etc. Mr. Nguyen, who is a police officer, kicked off our unit by coming into the classroom and talking about safety in the neighborhood and what it is like being a police officer. We have also brainstormed about the different tools that occupations use and wrote our first 8-sentence paragraph about firefighters.
Math: We finished our unit on addition and subtraction relationships and have jumped into a unit of Geometry. Your child will learn about solid (3-D) shapes such as cones, spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, etc. Students will also learn about shape attributes, such as corners, edges, curves. As the unit progresses, your child will learn about fractions and probability!
Thank Yous: A continued thank you to Mrs. Sawhill for coming in each week to work with the students on sight words and reading. It is really making a difference. Thank you, too, to all of the parents who have donated white copy paper. We were down to our very last ream so I am so thankful!!!Have a wonderful week and weekend!
Yours truly,Mrs. Taylor
