COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course provides an introduction to automotive service and repair, shop safety and shop operation, as well as tool safety, use and identification. The course will also cover automotive engines and basic systems: electrical, cooling, fuel, suspension, etc. With completion of the course the student will be prepared for an entry-level position in today’s automotive service industry.
Students will also have an opportunity to do several projects with the physical science department such as: compound machines, roller coasters, bottle rockets, and scramble cars.

Student performance will be
evaluated as follows:
Attendance:
Students will be expected to complete 80% of (2) semesters [a total of 540
course hours]
in order to obtain a certificate of completion
- with no exception.
Shop Activities: Will
account for 40% of a student’s grade.
Tests, Notebook: Will
account for 40% of a student’s grade.
Attitude/Work Habits: Will
account for 20% of a student’s grade.
Students will be evaluated on
their listening and participating in classroom activities.
They will also be evaluated
in shop participation, assigned job completion and
shop clean up.
EXPECTATIONS:
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY:
Good attendance and
participation are essential for success in Auto Mechanics Tech I. Students will be encouraged to, and rewarded
for being active, productive and positive contributors in class. Students are
expected to know and follow all class and shop rules. Student’s ability to demonstrate proper work
place behavior is essential so that a safe and productive learning
environment can be maintained. Refer to
page 5 of this syllabus, “ESLRs: Expected Schoolwide
Learning Results”.

Students are required
to maintain a 3-ring notebook that will contain their assignments, handouts and
tests as well as any information specified by the teacher.

(3) Unexcused absences
(failure to bring a re-admit after 3 days) per semester, will lower a student's
grade and (10) Tardies per semester, will lower a student’s
grade.
·
Make-up tests can
only be given if parent/guardian phones the teacher on or before the day of
absence
·
Students, who
drop the class after completing 20 hours of attendance, must be
given a grade per ROP policies and procedures.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY:
The teacher will be
respectful of all students, and maintain a level of expertise to insure
relevant instruction. All students will be informed of their class progress.
PARENT RESPONSIBILTIY: Please read,
review and sign “Parent/Guardian Acknowledgement” on page 7 of this course
syllabus.

Any student that does not comply with any shop safety rule will be refused the “Privilege” to work in the shop and be assigned to work in the classroom for a determined time set by the instructor.
1. Safety
glasses will be worn at all times in the shop.
2. Face shields will be used when using an
air grinder, electric grinder, or any grinding tool.
3. Students will use rubber gloves when
using the solvent tank.
4. Leather gloves will be worn when
handling hot or sharp objects.
5. Students
will not use any tools or equipment until they have had safety instructions on
their use.
6. The forklifts are off-limits to all
students.

precautions that will be covered as each is used:

Regional Occupational
Programs (ROP)
Students enrolled in a Regional
Occupational Program (ROP) course are expected to:
1. Carry an ROP identification card and/or wear
a school photo identification badge.
2. Provide transportation to and from class and
the ROP training site.
3. Remain enrolled in their ROP course for the
semester. If a student has three (3)
unexcused
absences, he/she may
be dropped from the class.
4. Arrive on time and be prepared for class.
5. Attend all scheduled classes.
6. Notify the ROP teacher and the training site
supervisor if unable to attend class or training site
because of illness or other reasons.
7. Complete all training site activities and
assignments and submit them when they are due.
8. Be courteous to
other students and respect the ROP teacher and the personnel at the training
site.
9. Conduct oneself in a mature manner.
10. Attend class with a positive attitude.
11. Dress appropriately for class and/or
training site.
12. Notify the ROP teacher of attendance
problems or schedule changes.
If any questions arise concerning ROP, students should contact their ROP teacher immediately. If this is impossible, high school students should contact their counselor at their home high school.
