What do all the marks on my child’s papers mean?
Every paper your child completes is graded. Sometimes we do pages together in class and they are stamped “Completed Together in Class.”
When grading, I strive to be as consistent as possible. Please read the following guidelines and save them for future reference if needed.
1. When an answer is wrong, a check is placed beside it.
2. When an answer is missing, the blank where the answer should have been is circled.
3. On the top of each side, the number wrong is recorded. A star indicates no errors.
4. On the front side of the paper (or the first page when there is more than 1 page) the number correct over the number possible is written.
5. When correcting spelling, language arts or any paper where the words are spelled on the paper, the answer is marked wrong if it is misspelled. Sometimes there will be an “sp” written beside the check mark so the student knows that the answer is correct but the spelling is wrong.
6. Backward numbers and letters are circled but not marked wrong unless it is on a spelling page, or if it changes the word (i.e. mixing up b’s and d’s.)
7. When a student scores less than 90% on any paper, it will almost always be corrected by him/her. If mistakes go uncorrected then children will not learn from their errors and they will continue to repeat the same mistakes. Therefore, if you see a check, or a circle on a page, but the answer is obviously correct, it indicates that your child was given further instruction by me if needed; he/she corrected the error, and I rechecked it.
Mrs. Grant and I correct hundreds of papers each week. As a result, we make errors. If you find an error and it affects your child’s grade, please feel free to send the paper back to school and I will rectify it. If I make a mistake in your child’s favor, it’s a gift—no need to let me know
When a child scores below 90% on any assignment, they will correct it. This is most often done in class with extra instruction from me. Occasionally I will send home a paper to be corrected if I feel that the student doesn’t have enough time in class to make the corrections.
