How are individual needs met?

Individual needs are met in a variety of ways. Each Monday a spelling
pretest is taken. A student who scores 93% or higher will move on to an
enrichment list (spelling list B) for the week. At the beginning of each
math unit a pretest is given. Students who score above 90% will be given
enrichment math work for their homework and classwork for that particular
chapter. All students read out of the basal reader; however, they also work
at an independent rate and level using the SRA Reading Program. For children
who have difficulty working up to the class expectations, a conference
between the teacher and parents will be held to determine whether the
classwork should be modified to accommodate specific learning challenges.

What is the discipline program in 2nd grade?

Positive discipline is always the first choice. The children receive lots of
verbal praise, pats on the back, hugs, etc. throughout the day. We also have
a can of love notes that students earn for good behavior, and they can give
to each other for doing kind deeds.

What are the consequences if the rules are broken?

When a student has trouble following the above rules, the behavior management
    program consists of the following:

  • Verbal warning
  • Turn white card
  • Turn green card (oops note goes home, student misses recess)
  • Turn pink card (phone call home or BIG OOPS note sent home, misses lunch recess)
  • Turn green card (visit with Mrs. Kruszona) When a student turns a card, it is brought to me and I indicate on the back of the card the rule broken and the day. Those students who have a white card on top at the end of the school day will receive a stamp on their card. All cards are returned to the white position each day. On Friday the students take home their behavior cards to show the parents. Hopefully there will be 5 stamps on the front of the card. If the child turned the card during the week, a parent can look on the back to see what happened. The card must be signed by a parent and returned on Monday of the following week. If a student does not return the signed card on Monday he/she will start the week by pulling his/her new card for the new week.

How are the children graded for their report cards?

Every assignment done in class, some of the homework assignments and all
tests are graded, recorded and averaged. The grades on the report card will
reflect the average grade in each subject area. The following is the grade
    breakdown:
    93%-100% O (Outstanding)
    85%-92% VG (Very Good)
    80%-84% G+ (Good and improving)
    75%-79% G (Good)
    70%-74% S (Satisfactory)
    65%-69% NI (Needs Improvement)
    Below 65% U (Unsatisfactory)

What is the policy for making up work/tests when my child is absent?

The student has one day to complete the homework for each day of school
missed. Please do your best to schedule appointments before and after
school, especially on Fridays. Each Friday students will take spelling,
religion and scripture tests. These tests cannot be made up. The students
will be excused from these tests once per quarter without it affecting their
grade, any subsequent tests missed after that receive a zero. Extenuating
circumstances should be discussed with the teacher.

What is the policy for tardies?

Children coming into the classroom after 8:00 a.m. must get a tardy slip from
the front office. Students who are tardy more than three times per quarter
will be required to serve detention with Mrs. Kruszona after school on
    Friday.

    Do the children have sharing?

We do not have regular sharing in 2nd grade. However, children may pick a
love note that allows them to bring a special sharing, and the Shining Star
may bring in sharing any day of his/her special week. If students have
something relating to a unit of study, or something that would be of
educational value, these things are always welcome.

    When is homework due?

Homework will be assigned on the first day of the week. Typically there will
be 4 homework assignments each night. The first two assignments will always
be to practice math flashcards and to read for at least 15 minutes. The
second will usually be spelling, handwriting (Sept. & Oct.), or scripture
memorization. The third will often be math, but may be phonics, grammar,
science or social studies. Homework is due back to school on Friday.

How does the reading at home program work?

The Monday newsletter will have a place at the bottom which will need to
be signed and returned on Friday, indicating that your child has read 15
minutes each night, or a total of 60 minutes during the week. During
September and October, the students will fill out a leaf for each book they
read. This program will be continued throughout the school year, except the
leaves will change to snowflakes, flowers, etc. The children who reach the
target number of pages for the month will receive a certificate to recognize
their accomplishment. Typically the children should read about 200 pages
each month for the first few months of the year and 250 or 300 pages per
    month as the year progresses.
