Notebook dividers to be labeled in order: Math Overview, Homework, Quizzes, Tests, Classwork and Notes 5. Spiral notebook 8 1/2” x 11” - just for note taking Grading: Your grade will be determined by the following weights: Homework 25% Tests 30% Quizzes 20% Notebook 5% Projects, Classwork will comprise the final 20% HOMEWORK Students will be able to ask questions on any problem they did not understand. It is more important to attempt a problem than to leave it blank. Except for problems of Mental Math, all work must be shown for each problem. Calculators will only be used for checking answers and for completed problems. Homework is to be turned in during the class period. Late homework assignments will be not be accepted. Work must be finished prior to math class. Homework will be graded. I will not be available on Monday afternoons due to faculty meetings. Math Club will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. This is a time set aside for the students to come into the library and do their math homework. It is a time where students having difficulty with a concept are able to have me assist them in a one-on-one situation. Math Club is also the time when make-up tests are administered. The lowest homework grade will be dropped each quarter. Homework may be done on both sides of the paper, but do not crowd your work. Skip a line between problems and write your answers in the answer column. All graphs must be on graph paper. All work must be shown. No work, no credit Pencil only The heading must be in the upper right hand corner of your paper and include the following information: First Name and Last Initial Pre-Algebra Date Assigned page and problems The assignment number must be written in the top left corner. Answers requiring commas, dollar signs, decimals, or labels will be marked wrong if these symbols are not used. Papers that are crinkled, sloppy, or torn will not be accepted. Tests Tests are given at the end of each chapter. Chapter Tests There will be approximately 4-6 tests given each quarter. In most cases students will not be allowed to use calculators during the test. No talking is allowed during testing. If a student is talking during a test or quiz, he/she will receive a zero regardless of who started the conversation. A student may retake a test if the score is less than 70%. There will be a mandatory tutoring session with either a teacher or a peer tutor prior to retaking a test. This needs to be scheduled in advance. Retakes must be completed within 5 days. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule retests. The scores of both tests will be averaged and this will be the score entered into the grade book. Cum ReviewTest Cumulative Tests are given after every three chapters. Cumulative tests review the concepts presented in these chapters. Since concepts were to have been mastered, tests may not be retaken. Quizzes Quizzes are given each week. These are given to check progress on the concepts of the week and to review previous material. There will be a quiz every week, except on weeks where there is a chapter test. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. If a students fails to make up a quiz it will then become the drop quiz. NO RETESTS ON QUIZZES Tests and quizzes will be taken when the student returns to class after an absence. The student should be prepared to take the test or quiz on the day that they return to class. If a student has been out for an extended period of time special arrangements may be made for testing. Projects Projects will be assigned on as needed basis. There will be the stock market project, which will be over the course of several weeks. The projects will occur during library, but the grade will be a part of their math grade. Classwork Classwork consists of work done during class. Sometimes it will be practice problems covering the day’s lesson. Classwork will also be Daily Reviews – these reviews will be given daily during the first 10 minutes of class. These papers will be graded on Friday and one Classwork grade will be given for the 3 or 4 Daily Reviews taken during that week.
