Dear Parents,

The Variety Show is this Friday at 9:30 and 1:00. Our Kindergarten Mass is coming up on June 1. The children are very excited about it!

We need at least one parent volunteer from Kindergarten to assist with Kindergarten costumes and props for the May 25 Variety Show “Celebration of Disney.”  Please email Mary Larkin if you are available  at marylarkin19@gmail.com  Costume information is below:

K: It’s a Small World

Students will wear a variety of costumes from around the world. If you can help by compiling or borrowing your own child’s costume or lending us anything you have for others, please let Mary know.    Alternatively, if you would like us to provide a costume from the SJA collection or other borrowed sources, please let Mary know by Friday, May 18. Please bring any costumes from home to the class for a costume check on Monday, May 21st.

Look what we did in Kindergarten last week!
And the appreciation continues. Thank you everyone for the wonderful, relaxation basket with the monogram mug and delicious bread. I greatly enjoyed sipping the tea and reading my magazine. My breakfast and lunch was absolutely perfect and my lotion has been put to good use along with the gift card. Thank you all for the wonderful thoughts and yummy treats for Teacher Appreciation week.  I absolutely love the creative bulletin board!  My kindergartners definitely made me feel appreciated and more!

Language Arts:    We learned about metamorphosis. We watched our caterpillars eat, gain weight and prepare themselves to form their chrysalis.   We learned that the patterns on a butterfly's wings are symmetrical and made mosaic butterflies to hang in our room. The students worked very hard on them and they look great!  We also cleaned up our garden to prepare for our butterfly release and tended to the beautiful flowers that the Daisy's planted. Nice job girls! Thank you so much to the parents that helped with our weed pulling and heavy lifting.  Our garden looks great!
For the remainder of the school year we will be reviewing sounds, continuing to build words and work with word families and consonant blends in our phonics centers.  We have also completed our kindergarten high frequency words.  We will now be working on words from the first grade sight word/high frequency list.  The high frequency word for this week will be "come".  In addition to literacy skills, we also read a variety of literature every week and worked on comprehension skills by responding to literature through verbal expression, writing and art projects.

Math: We completed our unit on money. We are now beginning our chapter on time and measurement. The students are continuing to work in small group centers for math as well to better meet their academic needs. They practice with flashcards, work with math manipulatives and with writing equations in their small groups.
Science: We observed and created our own bubbles by blowing solution on a flat surface. It was great fun!
Religion: We learned that God wants us to forgive others.
In addition, we had our weekly lessons in Spanish, Social Studies, Music, P.E., and went to the library and computer lab.

I will be sending home reading book bags. Have your child read the book at least three times during the week and only sign it once a week.  This will help with reading fluency. The book bags will be due with the homework the following Monday.  On the final page of the homework packet.  Your child may write a simple sentence and draw a picture of the story they read.  Encourage them to write a sentence using the kindergarten high-frequency words.  We have already practiced writing "I", "see", "my", "a ","to","like" "and", "the", "go","is","here", "for" ,"have" "said","with" "she" "are" "me""he" "play" "then","saw" "his","look", "he","went", "am", "this","there", "her"and "was".

Volunteers: This is week two on the volunteer schedule rotation.  Volunteers, I have changed the morning volunteers to arrive in the classroom at 8:15.  This will allow parent volunteers to sign in at the office and also give the students a chance to settle in for the morning. Thank you to all volunteers!
