Dear Junior High Parents,
For those of you that don't know me, my name is Susan Clark. I have been a St. James parent for 10
years and this is my third year teaching Spanish for our Junior High students. The students will have
Spanish on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings this year.
As a former student, I can appreciate the challenges and excitement of learning a foreign language.
My high school Spanish teacher once made a point of impressing upon our class that knowing
Spanish would be a valuable asset in the future. Fortunately, I developed an aptitude and love for
the Spanish language and continued my studies throughout college. I graduated with a degree in
Spanish from Gonzaga University.
In this new millinneium, Spanish is quickly becoming a necessary tool that our children will
need for future success. I'm hopeful that my time as a student living in Spain, in addition to my
years of experience as a bilingual health educator, and teacher, will be assets to your children.
The text and workbook that we use is entitled Paso a Paso by Prentice Hall publishers. In addition to
these books, we will also be using bilingual materials published by Scholastic News. Students will
have frequent exposure to reading, writing, and conversation in the classroom. It will be imperative
that students check the website for homework, tests and quizzes. (refer to the icon /backpack "la
tarea"). Since there are only an average of fourteen grades accumulated per quarter, it's important
that everyone completes assignments on time. Ten points will be deducted for homework turned in
one day late, beyond one day, late assignments won't be accepted and a "zero" will be given.
The following breakdown will apply to grades: Homework 25%, Classwork 10%, Quizzes 25% and
Tests 40%. These grades will be weighed equally with other subjects in considering a student's
qualification for Honor Roll. I look forward to working with your children and sharing my love of the
language and culture with them.
Sincerely,
Susan Clark
