Book Projects will begin on Monday and all students in Mrs. Bruckmann's
reading group will need to bring supplies to class Monday.
Choice #1: Make a collage based on your book.
For this project you will need a piece of large poster board and any art
supplies that will make your collage more attractive. You will need to look
through magazines and newspapers to find words and pictures that are relevant
to your book. All cutting and printing should be done neatly and your collage
should cover the entire poster board. Be sure to include the title of your
book somewhere on the collage.
Choice #2: Invent a board game based on the characters and events in your book.
For this project you will need a piece of poster board, art supplies and small
objects to be included as markers, spinners, or dice. You can base your game
on a board game you know how to play, but you may not copy it. All printing,
coloring, cutting and drawing must be done neatly. You will need to write out
instructions for your game and make sure they follow logically the progression
of your game. Your classmates should be able to play your game by reading and
following your instructions. The title of your book should be included in the
name of your game.
Choice #3: Assemble a story kit.
Choose at least 6 items that represent something from your book to include in
your “Story Kit.” Characters from your book should not be included as they are
not things. The items need to be labeled and placed in a box decorated to
represent your book. List each item in your story kit on the box. You will
need to be prepared to tell the class about each item and its importance to
the story. Your reason for including each item in the kit needs to be written
out in neat handwriting to be turned in with your kit. You will need the
collected items, a box to decorate, art supplies and paper to complete this
project.
Choice #4: Create a book jacket.
Create a new book jacket for your book. On one inside cover write a summary of
the book, and on the back flap write an “About the Author” biography. You can
go online to gather information about the author of the book. Write an “About
the Illustrator” biography as well. (You are the illustrator.) Create a color
illustration on the front of the jacket that depicts an important event in
your book. The title and author of the book should appear on this cover. All
printing and drawing should be done neatly. You will need a piece of 11x18
white construction paper, a good pencil and art supplies to complete this
project.
Choice #5: Creative Catalog
Design a catalog of at least 5 products that could be used by one or more
characters in your book. Illustrate each produce, give it a product number and
price, and write a brief but thorough description of the product. Make a cover
for your catalog, with illustrations and a company name. Design an order form
to be included in your catalog. All drawing and printing in the catalog must
be done neatly, with attention to spelling and grammar in your descriptions.
You will need art supplies, and a folder or binder to hold your catalog to
complete this project.
MAIDU PROJECT
The students have been assigned a project to create a Maidu village. As a
class we discussed the important components that must be included. They are
listed below as a guideline. The project is due on or before Nov.13. The
students will present their projects to the class upon completion. We have
spent a great deal of time viewing pictures of Maidu villages in our textbook
and online. I am confident the students are well aware of what an authentic
Maidu village looks like. I have encouraged the students to visit Effie Yeaw
Nature center in Carmichael as they have a Maidu village on display. The
students are required to informally site three or more resources used to
create their village (a visit to Effie Yeaw may be included as one). There are
many books available about the Maidu tribe from our neighborhood libraries as
well as many websites that show images of Maidu villages to use as resources.
The scoring rubric is also noted below. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs.
Curran or myself if you have any questions.
