The images in this digital collection are drawn from the New-York Historical Society's rich archival collections that document the Civil War. They include recruiting posters for New York City regiments of volunteers; stereographic views documenting the mustering of soldiers and of popular support for the Union in New York City; photography showing the war's impact, both in the north and south; and drawings and writings by ordinary soldiers on both sides.

Civil War Maps, a subset of Map Collections: 1500-2004

Approximately 2,240 Civil War maps and charts and 76 atlases and sketchbooks depicting battles, troop positions and movements, engagements, and fortifications. Included are maps of the whole United States, maps of major regions such as the Eastern or Southern States, maps of the Mississippi River, and state maps. The vast majority of the maps were prepared by Federal forces or by commercial firms in the North, but there are also a substantial number by Confederate military authorities and a few by Southern publishers.

Civil War Photographs, 1861-1865.

Contains 1,118 photographs which feature Civil War encampments, battlefields, and portraits (including Lincoln, Lee, and Grant) as captured by Mathew Brady and his staff of photographers. Brady's photography exhibits marked the first time Americans witnessed the carnage of war in their homeland.

"We'll Sing to Abe Our Song" Sheet Music about Lincoln, Emancipation, and the Civil War

Sheet-music compositions about Lincoln and the Civil War as recorded in popular music. The collection spans 1859-1909, the years from Lincoln's presidential campaign in 1859 through the hundredth anniversary of his birth in 1909. This music was compiled by Alfred Whital Stern who is considered the greatest private collector of materials relating to the life and times of Abraham Lincoln.

African American Sheet Music 1850-1920

1,305 pieces of African-American sheet music dating from 1850 through 1920. The collection includes many songs from the heyday of antebellum black face minstrelsy in the 1850s and from the abolitionist movement of the same period. Numerous titles are associated with the novel and the play Uncle Tom's Cabin. Civil War period music includes songs about African-American soldiers and the plight of the newly emancipated slave.
