Harlem of the West Tour: every Saturday Experience the bygone era of San Diego's Historic Harlem of the West. See where Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and other legendary jazz and blues stars played. See where Cab Calloway, Jelly Roll Morton, and other entertainers stayed. This 45 minute walking tour covers most of downtown's historic jazz and blues scene, business establishments, and legendary hang-outs. You'll experience African American history in the Gaslamp Quarter, 1870-1970's. When: Saturdays (except holidays) Where: Tour starts and ends at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites Hotel, lobby, (5th & E, downtown San Diego)
Departure Time: 11:00am (Please arrive 10 minutes early, if possible)
Return By: 12:30pm Attire: Comfortable/loose fitting clothes, walking or comfortable shoes.
Note: 45 minutes; walking required. Come eager to learn about the history and culture of African Americans in the Gaslamp Quarter. Cost: $5 per person Kids 16 and under free with parent or guardian. Groups of up to 30 welcome (ask about special group rate). Children's Walking Tour--SD History
The Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation has walking tours for kids. This tour features stories about SD around the 1850's. If you liked learning about Old Town way back in fourth grade and Balboa Park way back in fifth grade, you'll love this tour. Tours include the Davis House. Cost for tour is $5.00 and did I tell you it ends with a walk to Ghiradelli with a surprise treat at the end? Can you say YUM!!! They can accommodate up to 20 on a tour so it's great for a birthday party. Call for more information or schedule information 233-5227.
