Arrival Time at School
Supervision is provided during the school day only, starting at 8:00 A.M.
School starts at 8:50 A.M.
Arrival and Dismissal
Parents delivering or picking up students at school should not drive in the
bus loading/unloading zone. Parents are requested to use drop off area in
front of the school. Children who are picked up after school will wait in
front of the school. Students are not allowed to leave school grounds or cross
the road to waiting cars. Please walk your child across the street.
All students should go home immediately at the end of the school day or be
picked up within 10 minutes of school dismissal unless they are involved in an
after school activity or enrolled in our after school program. The school day
ends at 3:20 for first - sixth grade and ends at 1:20 for kindergarten.
Early Dismissal
School is dismissed at 1:20 P.M. on scheduled Wednesdays for all students
including kindergarten.
Attendance
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please either call the
school office or send a note when your child returns to school stating the
reason. School attendance is extremely important to your child's education,
thus excessive absences will be monitored. If you wish to obtain his/her
homework, please notify the school before 10 A.M. This will give the teacher
time to gather materials and send the homework to the office for pick-up after
3:20 P.M.
Tardies
Students who report to school after 8:50 A.M. must first report to the office
to obtain a tardy slip to be given to the teacher. Unexcused tardies will
count against earning a perfect attendance certificate.
After School Program
An after school program is available. The program will open at 3:20 P.M. and
end at 6:00 P.M. Please contact Colleen Gallardo at school for more information.
Educational Trip Guidelines
Field trips taken by children in each grade are for the purpose of:
1. Enriching lessons learned in the classroom.
2. Motivating students to continue learning.
3. Participating in athletic and musical events.
4. Visiting local sites of interest.
5. Awarding academic achievement and/or responsible citizenship.
POLICIES REGARDING TRIPS
*Field trips are designed for participation by the students, the teachers and
aides, and volunteer chaperones as needed.
*There may be a limit of one adult chaperone per family to assist on trips.
*Due to our district insurance coverage, adults other than the chaperones
(including any adult siblings of students) will not be allowed to attend.
*Only students enrolled in the participating class (es) may attend the field trip.
*Chaperones may not bring other children for which they are responsible.
*Children must travel to the event on the bus, board the bus at the departure
point and return on the bus.
*If a parent chooses to transport their child to an event in their private
auto, they must first, withdraw the student from school for the day. At no
time during the trip will the student be considered the responsibility of the
school personnel or chaperones on the trip. The student may be returned to
school following the event by reporting to the office for an admit slip.
*When there are entry fees, volunteer chaperones may be expected to pay for
their own entry. The teacher, before the field trip will indicate this.
*Certain major trips will require chaperones to attend mandatory inservice
meetings with the teachers in charge. On occasion, it may be required for
parents to attend a mandatory meeting before student participation on a trip.
*The dress code must be followed on the field trip.
Participation in field trips is a privilege. We expect our students to exhibit
excellent behavior on field trips. Teachers of students with questionable
behavior patterns may institute a behavior contract to insure proper
citizenship while on the trip. Students who fail to meet the standards
outlined in the contract may not be permitted to participate in future field
trips. Teachers/Staff at Centerville have the right to require parent
attendance if a childs continual misbehavior warrants such supervision.
Student Conduct
Centerville Elementary has high standards of conduct and behavior for all of
its students. We believe it is important for students and parents to know and
understand the following school rules.
Every student has the right to learn, and every teacher has the right to
teach! Therefore:
o Show courtesy and respect for everyone;
o Respect school and private property;
o Be on time and prepared to work;
o Do not disrupt the learning process.
Centerville School uses a disciplinary system that helps students learn
responsibility for their own behavior. Centerville's system of discipline
applies school-wide. It is enforced in a fair, consistent manner. Our goal is
to provide a positive learning environment and prevent the repetition of
unacceptable behavior to insure that the classroom and school grounds remain
safe and orderly.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Teachers are responsible for maintaining discipline within their own
classrooms. For minor behavior problems within the classroom, the teacher will
use a progressive system. Each teacher is responsible for informing parents
and students of the system. Detentions may be issued for serious infractions
of classroom rules.
Assignment of Students to Classroom
Every effort is made by your child's current teacher and staff specialists to
meet his/her special needs when making an assignment for next year's class.
The team tries to balance the ratio of boys and girls, academic levels, and
special social needs. If your child has needs we may not be aware of, please
take time to meet with the principal. Please do not specify a teacher, but
instead, describe your child's needs and every effort will be made to place
your son/daughter appropriately.
Breakfast and Lunch Program
A hot breakfast and lunch, which includes milk, is available to students in
grades K – 6. Students have a “debit account” which is used when buying a
breakfast and/or lunch. Checks or cash may be added to the student’s account
before school.
Breakfast will be free and lunch for $2.00. Reduced rates are available for
eligible families. Please check SUSD’s webpage for menus and other useful
information.
Foods from Home
All foods from home are expected to have nutritional value. Fresh fruit,
vegetables, juices and baked goods with low sugar content are encouraged for
lunches. Soft drinks and candy should not be included as snacks or lunch food.
Emergency Procedure Card
It is extremely important that each student have an Emergency Procedure Card
on file in case of injury or sudden illness. If your child has a known allergy
or other medical problem, please note this on the card. Any change of address,
phone number, or medical condition must be reported immediately to the school
office.
Emergency Plan
Centerville has a written plan of action that outlines specific courses of
action in the event that student safety is threatened. If a crisis exists,
this document informs and mandates procedures that immediately provide
consistent responses from school employees. Throughout the year, planned
drills are conducted to insure appropriate reactions from students and school
employees.
Library Media Center
The library is open every day for classroom use, research, study,
and book checkout. Each class is scheduled in the library once a week.
Students in kindergarten may check out one book at a time for 1 week. Students
in grades 1-6 may check out two books at a time for one week. Books may be
renewed after being out for a week or may be returned to check out another
book. We charge for overdue books. Students who have lost or destroyed books
will be responsible to pay for the replacements.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found
All outer apparel, such as coats and sweaters, and other items, such as
binders and lunch pails, should be labeled with your child's full name. The
lost and found box is located behind the cafeteria. Items not claimed will be
given to a charitable organization at the end of each trimester.
Dress Code
Please refer to the SUSD Annual Parent Information Handbook for a copy of the
District Dress Code Policy. The Governing Board expects all students grades
K-12 to attend school attired and groomed in a manner that is conducive to a
safe, secure and positive learning environment. Therefore, the Board prohibits
dress and grooming of students, which obstructs, inhibits or detracts from the
instructional program or creates safety concerns.
Medication at School
Medication is given at school only when absolutely necessary for adequate
treatment for a child. Parents must obtain a physician's written order giving
directions for the medication, the type, dosage, the method of administration
and the length of time the medication is prescribed. A Medication at School
form is available in the school office for this use and must be completed by a
physician. A parent authorization form giving school personnel permission to
administer the drug is
required. All medicines must be in their original pharmacy container.
Messages to Children
We are aware that it is sometimes necessary for you to leave a message for
your child. Please understand that a message from a parent to a child in class
occupies the teacher and disrupts the learning of all of the other students in
the classroom. Matters of a routine nature such as after school transportation
arrangements should be taken care of before a child leaves for school in the
morning. At times there is only one person attending the office, and it is not
possible to deliver a message to your children when they are away from their
classroom. Thank you for your help in this matter.
