The John Wash Elementary Milestones

 

What are the three most important things students need to know in Reading, Writing, and Math to be ready for the next grade.  Through cross-grade level collaboration we can prepare students for the future:

When I finish Kindergarten:

I will be able to-

 

Read:

 

1.    Blend vowel-consonant sounds orally to make words or syllables. (P.A. 1.9)

2.    Read simple one-syllable and high-frequency words. (W.R. 1.15)

3.    Retell familiar stories. (R.C. 2.4)

Writing:

 

1.    Write uppercase & lowercase letters of the alphabet independently, attending to the form and proper spacing of the letter. (W.S. 1.4)

2.    Use letters and phonetically spelled words to write about experience, stories, people, objects or events. (W.S. 1.1)

3.   Spell independently by using pre-phonetic knowledge, sounds of the alphabet and knowledge of letter names. (W.S. 2)

Math:

 

1.    Count, recognize, represent, name, and order a number of objects (up to 30). (Number sense 1.2)

2.    Use concrete objects to determine the answers to addition and subtraction problems (For 2 numbers that are each less than 10). (Number sense 2.1)

3.    Identify describe and extend simple patterns (such as circles or triangles) by referring to their shapes, sizes or colors. (Stats, Data, analysis probability 1.2)

When I finish 1st Grade:

I will be able to-

 

Read:

1.  Read common irregular sight words (ie. the, have, said, come) (Reading-1.11).

2.  Retell plot, character, setting, beginning, middle, end. (Reading 3.1)

3.  Read common word families (ie. –ite, ate). (Reading 3.1)

 

Writing:

1.  Capitalize the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun  I.(L.C.1.7).

2.  Use a period, exclamation point, or question mark at the end of sentences (L.C.1.5).

3.  Spell three- and four-letter short vowel words and grade-level-appropriate sight words correctly (L.C.1.8).

 

Math:

1.  Count, read and write whole numbers to 100 (N.S.1.1).

2.  Addition/subtraction facts; sums to 20 (N.S.2.1)

3.  Identify related addition/subtraction facts (N.S.2.5)

When I finish 2nd Grade:

I will be able to-

 

Read:

1.  Retell the story/facts so that I can build on comprehension

2.  Be able to decode multisyllable words in context

3.  Fluency = 90 wpm

 

Writing:

1.  Write complete sentences of 6 or more words with proper punctuation

2.  Write a friendly letter

3.  Write a paragraph with a topic sentence, facts/details

 

Math:

1.  Identify place value to 1,000 and order whole numbers to 1,000

2.  Add and subtract with regrouping to the hundreds place

3.  Count combination of dollar bills and coins

When I finish 3rd Grade:

I will be able to-

 

Read:

1.  Decode and use complex word families while reading fluently

2.  Demonstrate comprehension of text by identify answers to written questions using a variety of comprehension skills (ex. Main idea, details, authorĂ•s purpose, inference etc.)

3.   Identify important parts of a story and other literacy elements (plot, character, theme, etc)

 

Writing:

1.  Correctly write and differentiate the four different types of sentences (Writing1.1).

2.  Create a paragraph using a topic sentence, supporting facts/details and a conclusion (Writing1.0).

3.   Use correct grammatical forms, punctuation, capitalization and spelling when writing (Writing 1.0).

 

Math: 

1.  Demonstrate the understanding of multiplication & division concepts through modeling (arrays and equal groups) (N.S. 2.0)

2.   Use understanding of place value to count, read, write, compare and round numbers to 10,000 place.

3.  Use all four mathematical operations to solve word problems

When I finish 4th Grade:

I will be able to-

Read:

1.Fluency - Read 155 wpm fluently

2.Vocabulary 1.4- Know common roots & affixes derived from Greek & Latin to understand meaning of words.

3.Response and Analysis 3.2- Identify main events of the plot.

Writing:

1.Be able to write a 3 paragraph essay

2.Be able to write and understand response to literature summary, and report of information

3.Punctuation 1.4 Capitalization 1.6- Use commas in direct quotations. Use underlining or quotations for magazines, articles, works of art, songs, etc.

Math:

1.Know all math facts

2.Write tenths and hundredths in decimals and fractions and know the fraction and decimal equivalents, and writes a fraction to a decimal on a number line

3.Identify on a number line positive fractions, positive mixed numbers, and positive decimals to 2 decimal places

When I finish 5th Grade:

I will be able to-

 

Read:

1.Comprehension- Analyze text that is organized, show sequential & chronological order

2.Informational Materials- Draw inferences, conclusions, generalizations, support with textual evidence

3.Informational Materials - Discern main idea & concepts in text

Writing:

1.Create multiple-paragraph narrative compositions – Plot, setting, ending

2.1.6 edit & revise manuscripts to improve paper / grammar & meaning

3.1.2 create multiple paragraph expository composition – main idea -support

Math:

1.Reduce fractions

2.Basic Math Facts

3.Number line/ place value, fractions/ decimals

When I finish 6th Grade:

I will be able to-

Read:

1.  Describe and connect the essential ideas of what we read by using what we know about structure and organization of the text (Reading 2.0).

2.  Connect and clarify main ideas by identifying their relationships to other sources and related topics (Reading 2.3).

 

Writing:

1.  Create a multiple-paragraph expository composition.

2.  Write responses to literature that develop an interpretation which exhibits careful reading, understanding, and insight.

 

Math:

1.  Know how to compare and order fractions

2.  Know how to calculate and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers.
