WAMS will be starting an advisory program call "Student Learning Communities"
(SLC's). The purpose of SLC's is to improve student achievement and create a
safe environment by:
-
Closely monitoring each student's preparedness each day by ensuring they have
all the required materials and a completed planner.
-
Closely monitor each student's classwork and homework completion.
-
Establish academic goals along with appropriate strategies and regularly
monitor them.
-
Increase parental partnerships by increasing communication on every student's
academic progress.
-
Provide a caring adult for every child to ensure every student's voice is
heard.
Each student will be assigned an advisor. Students will meet in their
advisory class every morning (except minimum days). Advisors will be checking
to make sure every student is in dress code, has the required materials, their
planner is completed, and classwork/homework is completed. Each advisor will
keep parents/guardians informed through letters, phone calls, and conferences.
Students will establish goals for their grades every six weeks. Grades will
be monitored in advisory and students will reestablish goal minimally every
six weeks.
Advisors will keep students informed of upcoming events, school policies, and
involvement opportunities.
It is WAMS belief that completing both classwork and homework is essential for
students to learn and reach their potential. Every classroom teacher will be
monitoring their completion of work on a daily basis. Teachers will stamp the
student's planner to indicate if they have completed their work. A "BLUE"
stamp indicates they completed it while a "RED"
stamp means it was not completed. Students who do not complete their
classwork/homework will be assigned Lunch Homework Lab that day for the first
25 minutes of lunch. This will allow students additional time to complete
the work.
We strongly believe closely monitoring student's progress and setting goals
regularly will lead to more students reaching their potential. If you have
any questions, please contact your child's advisor.
